About the Winery

Today, Camigliano produces award-winning, organic Sangiovese. But, it's history is a compelling story that mirrors the feuding states of medieval Toscana and was the site of a famous battle between the Sienese and Pisans. From the Etruscan era to WWII, the land underneath these vines is truly historic and has been meticulously maintained for growth.

The symbol of Camigliano: the camel, found on a seal dating to the 13th century, can be connected to the influence of the papacy in the area, and there is speculation of connection to the movements of the Crusades that reached the Holy Land due to the castle's location on the pilgrimage routes to Rome.

The modern history dates from 1957 when Walter Ghezzi, a successful Milanese businessman, purchased and renovated the property. Walter's son continues the legacy of maintaining its medieval past whilst advancing the practices of this historic estate.

Reviews

Sweet cherry, iron, leather and sanguine aromas and flavors highlight this supple, vibrant Brunello. Features a firm backbone of tannins and finishes with tobacco, underbrush and mineral notes. Best from 2021 through 2035. ~ WS 95pts

Deep red. Exotically perfumed nose of sweet spices, ripe red cherry, licorice and camphor. Rich and dense on entry, then refined; hints of quinine and licorice complicate the rich red fruit flavors. Finishes long and juicy. Not a blockbuster Riserva, but a very graceful one that offers welcome early appeal. ~93 VM, Ian d'Agata
