About the Wine

In Bordeaux, second wines are like the “little brothers” to the estate’s Grand Vin. These are some of the best buys that you can find out there. Wines that share grapes, terroir, and winemaking style with the Grand Vin, but without having to spend an arm and a leg.

Petit Inedito is the second wine or “little brother” to Calyptra’s Grand Vin, Inédito Limited Edition. This beautiful red blend of Cabernet, Syrah, and Merlot shares many similarities with the TOP Inédito, but at an even better price. Descorchados (the most important wine magazine in South America) said that Petit Inédito is “a very good addition to the winery's catalog and has an excellent price-quality ratio.”

Cachapoal is located in the northern half of the very well-known Rapel Valle, between Maipo and Colchagua. Over the years, this region became mistakenly overlooked by its more famous neighbors, but recently, this wine region has recently reawakened the interest of some of the most acclaimed wine critics in the world.

Decanter magazine said: At present, the marketplace is seeing Chilean wine undergo an exhilarating transition from good-value everyday wine to something more diverse and quality-orientated. In the same vein, Cachapoal is finally starting to shed its apathy and aiming to put its name up there with Chile’s best wine regions.”

This first-class wine region is home to Calyptra, a family-owned boutique winery founded by Dr. José Zarhi, a very successful plastic surgeon who purchased the 150-acre estate in 1989.

The 100-acre vineyard is placed on terraces between the pre-Andean range and the Cachapoal river, at nearly 1000 meters altitude. The vines thrive in calcareous and colluvial alluvial terraces. The vineyard is managed under sustainable and organic practices.

Calyptra's philosophy is simple: “To produce unique, authentic, honest wines that reflect the soil, the origin, and the dedication and passion.” They overachieve this mantra by delivering premium wines, that will enchant any wine lover or wine critic. Just to give you an idea of the excellent quality that this winery delivers, these wines have been featured on James Suckling’s “Top Chilean Wines” on several occasions.

2018 was a great year for Chile. Wine Advocate blessed this vintage with a 96-point review, and Vinous media said that it was "a textbook vintage for Chile. If there’s a word that sums it up, it’s balance. The 2018 vintage is the second most productive harvest of the decade, delivering vivacious and expressive reds."

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Syrah, 8% Merlot. Ruby red color with violaceous reflections. The expressive nose with aromas of Cherry and fresh plum, fruits of the Forest, and a floral and spice touch. The mouth is juicy, with firm but well-balanced tannin. Medium acidity, silky and fresh finish with notes of cassis and black plum.

Reviews

A sort of second wine after the top Inédito, this Petit is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Syrah, and 8% Merlot, all from vineyards planted in alluvial and colluvial soils on the Calyptra property in Alto Cachapoal. 75% of the wine has been aged in barrels and the rest in stainless steel, and the result is very consistent with the style of the house: the herbal aromas of mountain wine and the abundance of fruity flavors and red fruits that make you salivate. A very good addition to the winery's catalog and has an excellent price-quality ratio. ~94 Descorchados
