About the Wine

Gould Campbell is an extremely small, family-owned Port shipper. The company got its start in 1797 by Garret Gould. The family has never owned any of their own vineyards, instead, they rely on their close relationships with farmers of the region. Throughout the 19th century, the company steadily built up its reputation for the quality of its Vintage Port. In 1970, the Symington family, who had been port producers since 1882, acquired the firm. It is therefore one of the few port companies to remain a private, family business thus retaining its individuality and distinctiveness.

Aged for an average of 10 years in oak, this Tawny Port gradually loses its robustness of youth and gains a silky texture with a characteristic nutty flavor. Tawny Port, is an exceptional pairing next to most desserts but excels when paired with chocolate and nut based dishes.

Tasting Notes: Golden Brown in color. On the nose, its main characteristic is a sappy caramel aroma that is lifted with a dried white mulberry and walnut skin aroma. The palate is lush and full, showcasing a slightly drier style of dessert wine that is begging for a slice of German chocolate cake

Reviews

An attractively dry style of wine, with a concentrated inner core of firm acid and lightly burnt flavors. It has intensity, along with good fruitiness. This lesser brand of the Symington group is worth seeking out, both for its quality and for its good value. ~90 Wine Enthusiast
