About the Wine

Just over 1 mile from the world-renowned Château Margaux you will find Château Labegorce. These two magnificent Châteaux share great terroir similarities, but luckily for us, what they don’t share is the price!

The history of Château Labegorce dates to the 14th century, being one of the largest (and most beautiful) wine estates in the entire Médoc, and even though during the French Revolution, there was an order to divide the land into three different estates, Chateau Labegorce continued to be the largest of all, with more than 600 acres of land.

If there’s a word that can describe Château Labegorce is “history”. The classic castle, which until today remains the flagship of the property, was built in 1821.

Since 1989, this Château has been owned by the Perrodo family. Hubert Perrodo was a key piece in the great growth and positioning of this Château; He was responsible for pooling the lands that had been divided during the revolution and acquiring a few more acres. Currently, Nathalie, Hubert's daughter, is the director of this outstanding project, and with the help of Marjolaine Maurice, she has managed to revolutionize and modernize this property from the vineyard to the winery, always protecting the traditions and history of the place.

The Laborgoce vineyard is comprised of over 170 acres specifically planted with the beloved Bordeaux Blend: Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vast majority of these vines are approximately 30 years old, however, there are some vines of more than 100 years old that are still preserved. The terroir is magnificent! I mean, what else can you expect from 1st Growth’s neighbor other than pure perfection? It is composed mainly of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone.

2018 Château Labegorce Margaux is a beautiful Bordeaux blend that delivers a charming, elegant, and superb taste, and it comes from a supreme vintage in Bordeaux.

Here's what wine critic Jeb Dunnuck says about 2018 Bordeaux:

"In short, 2018 is a thrilling vintage with no shortage of legendary wines and I cannot imagine anyone who purchases these wines will be disappointed...It’s possible to find attractive, well-made, even outstanding, wines that punch well above their price points."

2018 is a vintage that will certainly mark the spirits. A humid spring and an exceptional pressure of fungal diseases were followed by a summer with extreme sunshine conditions. Certain areas of the Margaux appellation and more generally the South of the Médoc were favored by a few thunderstorms during the summer which allowed to reduce the impact of the water stress. This was the saving grace of the vintage that allowed the wines to maintain a certain level of freshness.

Aging: 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, 40 to 50% new.

Tasting Notes: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. This is a wine that needs time to open, but when it does, it’s magic! So, our advice: Let it breathe for a few minutes before drinking it! You will find elegant aromas of blueberries, raspberries, and flowers. A very powerful palate, with silky tannins, a subtle freshness, and a long finish. This wine has great aging potential. Pairing: Red meat, slow-cooked beef stew, and mature cheeses.

Reviews

The 2018 Château Labegorce is a perfumed, already complex Margaux based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its medium ruby hue gives way to lovely notes of blueberries, raspberries, flowers, sandalwood, and assorted baking spice cabinet-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied, with beautifully pure fruit and silky tannins, it's a wine that grows on you with time in the glass. It's not a blockbuster, but it exudes elegance and class as well as balance. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 20-25 years or more. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

There are notions of some serious wood aging here, which are happily sustained by the black currant flavor and lively acidity. It will be a firm wine for many years before it opens up. ~94 Wine Enthusiast

This is a plump and rich Labégorce with full-body, juicy tannins, and a long and flavorful finish. Lots of pure and intense fruit. ~ 93-94, James Suckling

Deep dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate bright rim. Delicate mint and nougat, black forest berries layer, fine fine wood savouriness, a hint of vanilla. Juicy, elegant, fresh structure, fine tannins, fruit extract on the finish, salty aftertaste, shows class, certain aging potential. ~94 Falstaff

The 2018 Labégorce is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It has 14% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with a beautiful perfume of kirsch, black cherry compote, and cassis, plus hints of licorice, lilacs, and baking spices. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly played with soft tannins and compelling freshness supporting the fragrant red and black fruits, finishing on a spicy note. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Labégorce is a plump, juicy Margaux that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, licorice, chocolate, and new French oak are all kicked up in this decidedly opulent, heady Margaux. Soft curves and pliant fruit add to its raciness. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. ~93 Antonio Galloni

Silky and refined in feel, with perfumy black currant paste, plum reduction, and blackberry compote notes forming the core while sandalwood, black tea, and cedar accents drape the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2034. 9,000 cases made ~92 Wine Spectator

This is a high-energy wine with bright floral aromas, super vibrant cranberry-cassis flavors, and a plump richness. The Perrodo family united two neighboring properties that had once been part of the Château Labegorce estate -- L'Abbé de Gorse and Labegorce Zede -- bringing the total to 65 hectares. with mostly gravelly sandy soil. Now the average age of the vines is nearly 30 years. Unlike the equally impressive 2016, this blend is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant at 50% with Merlot at 44% and Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc each at 3%. The summer, says winemaker Marjolaine de Coninck Was amazing for ripeness. ~92 Decanter
