About the Wine
“It has always been classed at the top of the second growths of Saint-Emilion. Exceptionally well maintained, it produces an average of 50 tonneaux of a delicate, soft, perfumed wine, perfectly preserved” wrote Edouard Féret of Badette in 1898. Certainly, much wine has flowed through the Chateau since then, but with the command of the new owner, the comments made in the 19th century perfectly apply to the wine of today!
“Badette is surrounded by classified growths on all sides. I want the wine to express the terroir. With power, but also with elegance, finesse." -Marc-Andre Vandenbogaerde
The Estates vineyards are located next to Chateau Figeac and Troplong Mondot. The Chateau is under the guidance of the Belgian-born Marc-Andre Vandenbogaerde who aims to restore this Chateau to its former glory. Armed with an uncapped budget, the new regime has completely renovated the vineyards and Chateau. Marc-Andre has made it his mission to vault Chateau Badette back amongst the classified growths.
“Start from zero and build, that’s what I like. If I wasn’t a wine lover, I would never have got into all that. Start with nothing and end up doing the best possible, that is my objective.” -Marc-Andre Vandenbogaerde

This estate continues to make a brilliant, ripe, modern, yet still grounded style of Saint-Emilion, and I loved the 2020 Château Badette. Lots of pure cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and classy oak emerges from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with wonderful purity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s a smoking good wine that will keep for two decades. ~93-95 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2020 Badette is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, aging for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. The alcohol is 15%. Opaque purple-black colored, the 2020 Badette erupts from the glass with bombastic notes of baked blackberries, plum preserves and kirsch, followed by hints of cedar chest, Chinese five spice, tar and licorice, plus a touch of eucalyptus. The full-bodied palate is full-on rich and decadent, featuring layers of black fruit preserves and exotic spices with a firm, grainy texture and plenty of freshness to support, finishing long and opulent. ~92-94+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Tight and linear with beautifully curated tannins that spread across the palate. Medium body. Fine-textured. ~92-93 James Suckling
