About the Wine

The illustrious history of Chateau Montrose is built on the backs of three different pioneering families, who over two centuries, built one of the greatest Chateaus in all of Bordeaux. Chateau Montroseis a reflection of their spirit, marked by their pursuit of excellence from vintage to vintage maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality. As pioneers in the Médoc, visionary builders and astute managers, they tended and got the best out of its unique terroir. It is they who laid the foundations to which Montrose now owes its image and its unique place in the world of great wines.

Today the Chateau is run by Martin and Thomas Bouygues who purchased the estate in 2006. The Bouygues brothers invested over 55 million Euros into intensive renovations with the priority of converting the Chateau into one of the greenest and most environmentally friendly estates in all of Bordeaux. Martin and Thomas also brought in top talent and highly regarded professionals, like Jean-Bernard Delmas who for generations was the director of Chateau Haut Brion.Delmas retired in 2011 and was succeeded by Hervé Berland who previously managed Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

The vineyards are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 32% Merlot 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot totaling 95ha. Their vines average 40 to 60 years in age. The Chateau is currently in the process of converting their vineyards to 100% organic farming with the goal of fully converting by 2025.

2015 started with a colder winter than in previous years. The start of the season, mild and quite sunny, favored early bud burst. June and July were dry, marked by water stress leading to a clear slow-down in the development of the vine. The showers in September gave measure, once again, of the qualities of the terroir: drainage was perfect, and the Cabernet Sauvignon on the plateau bordering the estuary benefited from a very beneficial drying wind. The grapes were of very good quality, and they further strengthened the ultra-precise plot selection, which sometimes involved several passes through a plot in the search for optimum ripeness.

Tasting notes: Red Wine. 46% Merlot, 15% Cabernet-Franc, 8% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 1% Petit-Verdot. A fine, intense garnet red color. The floral and discreet nose reveals fresh and delicate notes of violet and raspberry accompanied by toasty and spicy aromas On the palate, this round, full and fleshy wine is a good reflection of its appellation. It has powerful tannins and very good balance.
