The Benegas family produced the malbecs that caused me to fall hard for Mendoza, some twenty years ago. This is a storied estate and quality is always very high. Only recently, these wines have returned to the United States, and I couldn't be more pleased. I cannot think of another Cabernet in the world where Michel Rolland and Paul Hobbs had a hand in the production, let alone for a wine under $30! This is real deal Cabernet from the Benegas estate vineyards. The wine is fresh, light and dances in the mouth. It's not over the top heavy. Rather, the oak is tame and interlaced elegantly. There is a purity to this wine that underscores why Mendoza Cabernet may be the best quality and value Cabernet in the universe. Highly recommended!
About the Wine
From 2800 feet above sea level, the Benegas estate produces some of Mendoza’s top wines from a mix of vines planted in the 1930s and ‘60s. Their maturity translates to delicious complexity in wines that are more reminiscent of their French heritage than South American sunshine. Federico Benegas Lynch’s Argentine winemaking skills are accented by years of consulting with the world’s best including Michel Rolland and Paul Hobbs. The 2015 leaps from the glass with ripe blackberry flavors, black pepper, and fresh herbaceous notes like rosemary, sage, and thyme. Oak is a muted accent in here, which utilizes used barrels to leave the Cabernet refreshing instead of heavy. Bordeaux style plus the intensity of Andean sun, and the passion only a family legacy inspires, Benegas Cab is a fresh, unique bottle that blends sophistication with rustic tradition. At $18.99, it’s a Cab that quite simply can’t be beat.
About the Winery
In the 19th century, Don Tiburcio Benegas was already a firm believer in the terroir of Mendoza long before grapes were a cash crop anywhere in the Americas. His early plantings of Bordeaux varieties make up the sprawling Benegas estate that’s now an icon across South America. Their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vines are gently watered by Andes snowmelt that lets Cab ripen beautifully.
A dense and slightly jammy wine, yet there's a silky and firm backbone to it. Medium body and a fresh finish. Drink now. 91 JS
