About the Wine

Founded in 1989, Quintessa has been on an unrelenting quest for excellence. With an emphasis on sustainability in the vineyard, the owners, Agustin and Valeria Huneeus farm this estate fully organically and biodynamically, and even maintain a 100-acre nature preserve. The wine is meant to be dynamic from vintage to vintage with an ever-changing blend of grapes that emphasize Cabernet Sauvignon as the centerpiece. This wine is guaranteed to impress you today, and will only improve over the next decade or more

Quintessa is sandwiched between the Napa River and the Vacas Mountain range, this unique terroir gives the estate its own set of microclimates across the property. Because of this wide range of temperature differentials and an even more diverse soil array, each vineyard block is farmed individually. These small plots allow for a lot of control over the growth of the grapes and ultimately the final blend of the wine.

“The precision of the vintage, a result of the cooler weather, long harvest, and continued study of the property, is evident in the movement and texture of the wine. Already showing the hallmarks of a great age-worthy vintage, the 2018 Quintessa is both pleasurable to drink now and will continue to age with grace as it develops more savory notes and length to the finish over the next 20 years.”

~ Rebekah Wineburg, Winemaker.

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, shiny ruby with touches of magenta. The nose showcases touches of flowers such as lilac, violet and fruit such as blueberry reduction, cotton candy, rose candy, cassis jelly, apricot jam and watermelon gum. The palate has a fruity entrance, evolving on an aromatic mid-palate lingering on fresh fruit and granular tannins with touches of boysenberries.

Reviews

This is beautifully polished with firm, dusty tannins to the blue fruit, as well as chocolate and cedar character. Some much earthier character, too, from mushrooms to bark. Forest flowers. Perfumed. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a soft, creamy finish. Some iron and iodine to this. So attractive at the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Better after 2023. ~99 James Suckling

The 2018 Red Wine is a powerful, driving Napa Valley wine. Scorched earth, iron, chocolate, and leather give the red cherry/plum fruit distinctly savory accents. This is an especially tight wine in a vintage that yielded generally more supple, open-knit reds. Quintessa is one of the first Napa Valley estates I visited, many years ago. Since then, the property has undergone several stylistic phases. It will be interesting to see where things go over the next handful of years here. ~93 Antonio Galloni

Very fresh in feel, with a racy and refined core of cassis, damson plum and raspberry reduction notes inlaid with black tea and anise hints. A subtle mineral edge adds length to the finish, with the fruit showing nice restraint despite its youth. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. Drink now through 2035. ~93 Wine Spectator.
