About the Wine

The history of Chateau Mangot reaches all the way back to 1556. Most recently cared for by the third generation of the Todeschini family, the Chateau now has 34 hectares of organically-farmed vines in St. Emilion and produces expressive wines with minimal intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar—wines worthy of the storied winery’s legacy.

Minimal intervention isn’t just a buzzword to the Todeschini family. It’s been well over a decade since any non-organic chemicals have been used in the vineyards. Native yeasts ferment the grapes and a limited amount of sulfites are used. This has been their way long before this style of winemaking became the trend. Their efforts pay off in pure, precise, expressive wines of consistent quality that are a joy to drink.

The 2019 Chateau Mangot Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is a faithful portrait of the family’s winegrowing and winemaking philosophy and their vineyard’s 4 terroirs: the foot of the slopes, the slopes, the terraces, and the plateaus. The grapes were harvested plot by plot according to grape variety with consideration also taken to the terroir, altitude, exposure, and age of the vines in each of their 21 plots.

The result? A deep, expressive, racy, and intense wine that is nevertheless fresh and full of elegance.

Aging: 15 months in 60% used and 40% new French oak barrels.

Tasting NotesA fruit-forward blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon burst with cooked dark fruits, spice, espresso, and smoke. The palate echoes the deep flavors of those cooked dark fruits plus cedar and tobacco. Balanced with firm tannins that lead to a long, earthy finish. Think steak, mushrooms, or duck for pairing.

Reviews

Dark ruby-garnet, violet reflections, wider water rim. Fine precious wood spice, some vanilla, ripe cherry fruit underlaid with minerals, delicate hints of licorice, and herbs. Juicy, elegant, and very balanced, red cherries, fine tannins, good freshness, salty finish, lingers for a long time, already very seductive, with good potential. ~94 Falstaff

(85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14%. Tasted in December 2021 in Windisch) Very clean, complex nose, intense fruit, black currant, cool stone, smoky notes, with more air black cherries, herbs above, and subtle spiciness. The palate is soft and fleshy, a mouthful of wine, creamy in texture, with a very good balance, fruit, tannins, acidity, everything in balance, the opulent fruit is supported by extremely fine-grained tannins, the wine has body and yet a lot of elegance. Very long, fruity, and spicy finish with a chalky note in the finish. This is an excellent wine that will be enjoyable from an early age, yet has the potential to age well. If I remember correctly, this wine costs about 25 francs - that's a gift given its quality. Buying tip! 2023-2036+. ~94 Adrian van Velsen

The nose is elegant, fruity, and offers definition, a beautiful finesse of the grain, and delicacy. It reveals notes of fleshy/pulpy cassis, juicy Boysenberry, small notes of strawberry associated with touches of small blue fruits, lily, cornflower as well as fine hints of sense of the place, licorice, and sweet spices. The palate is fruity, delicate, and offers an acidulous frame as well as a fine freshness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy cassis, fresh blackberry, small notes of raspberry associated with touches of violet plum, lilac, cornflower, zan, and chocolate. Good length. ~94 VertdeVin

Opaque purple-black colored, the 2019 Mangot strides confidently out of the glass with ripe, expressive scents of baked plums, blueberry compote, and Black Forest cake followed by suggestions of allspice, espresso, aniseed, and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate has loads of densely layered black fruit flavors intertwined with spice box and mineral accents and framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy with a slight touch of wood poking through. ~92-94+ Robert Parker
