This is a storied estate and quality is always very high. Only recently, these wines have returned to the United States, and I couldn't be more pleased. I cannot think of another Cabernet in the world where Michel Rolland and Paul Hobbs had a hand in the production, let alone for a wine under $30! This is real deal Cabernet from the Benegas estate vineyards. The wine is fresh, light and dances in the mouth. It's not over the top heavy. Rather, the oak is tame and interlaced elegantly. There is a purity to this wine that underscores why Mendoza Cabernet may be the best quality and value Cabernet in the universe. Following WWII, Giovanni Gaja acquired large vineyard holdings in the area. His son, Angelo, is considered one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in Italy. After studying wine in Montpellier, he was one of the first to bring French techniques such as barrique barrel ageing, malolactic fermentation, and modern technical innovations. Yet, he continued to implement extended macerations following fermentation. By raising the level and recognition of Nebbiolo, Angelo Gaja has been commended by every major wine publication in the world and acknowledged as an innovator. Since the early 1990's, Gaja has expanded his empire into Tuscany with significant vineyards in Montalcino and Bolgheri. He left us in July 2017 after a long illness. This year I tasted with his widow Giuliana and winemaker Oscar Arrivabene. I wanted to repost a memory from the last time I tasted directly with Domenico Clerico: When I tasted with Domenico Clerico just three years prior in this same room, I remember the pure sense of vitality and enthusiasm that radiated off this legendary vintner. His soulful energy permeated the entire room like warm rays of sunshine pouring through those transparent glass walls. Domenico was inexhaustible. He proudly introduced his line of new releases and then brought me down to the cellar to show me all his vinous treasures and keepsakes. Domenico was a lean and wiry man with a thick mane of gray hair, a broad smile and penetrating eyes that always looked straight ahead. He will be remembered for his game-changing contributions to the stylistic evolution of Barolo. Domenico Clerico is a modernist who succeeded in articulating a contemporary voice for the Nebbiolo grape. He farmed vineyards in Monforte d'Alba to produce the legendary wine Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra (now called Ciabot Mentin), Barolo Pajana and Barolo Per Cristina from the Mosconi cru. With a leased parcel in Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Domenico Clerico made his Barolo Aeroplan Servaj. In local dialect, the term means “wild airplane” and is what the young, high-spirited Domenico was nicknamed by his father. ~93WA

***Free Shipping on 12 bottles of this wine***

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0646/products/1_aa53aef7-8298-4bcf-8eca-cef223a68381.jpg?v=1605973206
2017-bodega-polo-herencia-trabajo-malbec-valle-de-uco-mendoza
2017 Bodega Polo Herencia Trabajo Malbec Valle de Uco Mendoza

New Arrival from Outstanding Argentine vintage

Irrigated by Andean snowmelt

Sourced from prized La Consulta vineyard in Uco Valley

BHW Direct Import Exclusive

Free Shipping on 12 bottles

About the Wine

Bodega Polo is a new BHW Direct Import from a winery with a long history and vineyards located in the Beverly Hills of Uco Valley in La Consulta. Savory, high-toned aromatics and brisk mineral notes lend energy and delineation as this vivid wonderfully alive wine opens up in the glass. The flavors are dark and incisive, but it is the wine's total sense of harmony that is most compelling. All of the elements are simply in the right place. The 2016 is tremendous. It's as simple as that. As is often the case, Pontet-Canet is one of the most singular wines in Bordeaux. Alfred Tesseron could have chosen to play things safe when he took over the management of the estate in the mid-1990s. Instead, he chose a very different path. No proprietor in Bordeaux has taken more risks over the last two decades than Alfred Tesseron. A commitment to biodynamic farming, sustainability across the entire estate more broadly, and the adoption of new concepts for Bordeaux, such as aging a portion of the wine in terra cotta, set Pontet-Canet apart from other properties in Pauillac and the Left Bank. Thrilling notes of pure crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, crushed mint, graphite, and crushed rock notes all emerge from this deep, powerful, yet elegant Pauillac. The style of this wine has become more and more finesse-driven and pure, yet it hasn’t lost a beat on concentration or length. Winemaker Jean-Michel Comme mentioned it was wet at the beginning of the year, but thankfully the weather changed in late June. Thus, 2016 was a more normal/typical mildew year, so the disease pressure wasn’t too much of an issue. Then it was very dry until fall. He believes the vintage could be compared to 1961 or 2010. This classic vintage of Tignanello has a leg up, albeit slim, over the previous vintage precisely because the protagonist here is Sangiovese. This wine shows a high caliber of fresh primary fruit that is direct and intense. In the mouth, the wine is focused and sharp. Ultimately, the 2016 Tignanello is slightly more streamlined compared to the more fleshy 2015. The wine is integrated and smooth with long-lasting favors and beautiful tannin management. Despite its heft, the wine is elegant and silky through and through.

This has been an important year in the wild world of Angelo Gaja. His most prized wines made in Barbaresco have now been returned to full appellation status (they are no longer IGT Langhe). His children, most notably Gaia Gaja, are taking on an increasingly public role to ensure a seamless generational transition. His wines, spanning from Piedmont in the far North of Italy to his two Tuscan estates, are showing consistent results and fully integrated production. This is especially true of his beloved Ca' Marcanda estate in Castagneto Carducci (Bolgheri), the apple of Angelo Gaja's eye. The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda is an excellent edition of one of the best wines made on the Tuscan Coast. Also very interesting are the elegant and more subdued wines from the 2014 vintage. ~ 95pts, WA

Very Bordeaux-like, this red offers plum, cherry, coffee, green olive and spice aromas, and flavors. This wine is very much a symbol of a united move toward more streamlined and delicate expressions obtained with winemaking techniques that reflect a more traditional and Tuscan ideal.
