About the Wine

“Southern charm in the Rhone” is the name that Wine Spectator used to refer to the Gigondas appellation in an article where they also stated that this region “has started to peek out from the shadows of its prestigious neighbor Châteauneuf-du-Pape as the appellation and its producers push quality forward, with wines that are certainly worthy of your attention.”

Gigondas is home to Château de Saint Cosme, the leading winery of this appellation, where the Barruol family has been producing fine wines for over 500 years. This makes it the oldest Château in the region. Today, this benchmark winery is led by Louis Barroul, who has dramatically increased the quality of the wine.

The vineyard of 37 acres is planted just next to the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain and was converted into a biodynamic in 2010. The result is impressive wines that are a wonderful reflection of their terroir. Owner Louis says “The ancient know-how, the organic viticulture and the understanding of the terroirs are part of our strong ideas. It results in purity, balance, and beauty.”

Les Deux Albion is a beautiful blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Clairette from the three Côtes-du-Rhône Villages communes of Plan de Dieu, Saint Maurice, and Cairanne. This wine comes from a great vintage. Wine Spectator gave this year with a 94-point review, and said that "Reds are rich, ripe and expressive, with refined textures. A gorgeous vintage."

Aging: 18 months in cement vats and wooden tanks.

Tasting Notes: 50% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 5% Clairette. This wine is the perfect combination of deepness, structure, and finesse with aromas and flavors of roasted game, mesquite, olive, crushed plum, and black currants. This wine is an absolute pleasure to drink and share. Pair it with grilled or smoked meat and dishes with herbs, roasted mushrooms, and onions.

Reviews

Spicy notes of licorice, nutmeg, and crushed granite accent rich streaks of blackberry preserve in this Syrah-dominant red blended with Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Clairette. A juicy yet briskly balanced wine marked by a mineral lift, it's an elevated Côtes-du-Rhône sourced from the prestigious village appellations of Plan de Dieu, Saint Maurice and Cairanne. At peak now–2025. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

Juicy and fresh, with plum and blackberry compote notes backed by violet, dark licorice and wood spice accents. This has gutsy energy through the finish. Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Clairette. Drink now through 2024. 5,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator
