About the Wine

Ghiaia Nera is translated to “black soils.” This name was given to honor the volcanic soils of the vineyard located in Etna DOC, a volcanic wine region in NE Sicily.

Etna DOC is a paradise for wine lovers and one that needs to be discovered. James Suckling said: Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir are among the most delicate grapes in the world, producing world-class wines with power and finesse. If you have ever thought about an alternative that shows the beauty of both these grapes, Etna Rosso wines should be top of your list.”

Tasca D'Almerita is located in the splendid region of Sicily in Italy, the largest island in the Mediterranean. Its history dates back 8 generations. With more than 5 estates around the entire island, Tasca D`Almerita is one of the most important wineries in all of Sicily and Italy. Their goal is to create great wines from different terroirs. Each Tenuta has different and specific conditions, and the grapes are carefully selected and planted in each one.

It all started in 1830, when the Tasca family acquired almost 3,000 acres in the province of Palermo, creating Tenuta Regaleali, the first of the 5 tenutas that are part of Tasca d'Almerita.

The fame and recognition of Tasca D'Almerita grew along with its vineyards, Tenutas, and wines. In 2012, the winery was named “The Winery of the Year” by the Gambero Rosso, one of Italy's most important food and wine guides.

The Tasca family is not only ambitious in wine, in addition to the 5 farms where they produce high-level wines, they also own a luxury tourist complex on the island of Salina. This is a must visit for all travelers who enjoy good food, good wine, and great culture.

Since 2018, Tasca D'Almerita vineyards are managed under sustainable viticulture and certified by Viva and SOStain. The Tasca family is completely committed to the land and the environment. They say: "We work every day so that our children will have a better environment than ours. Sustainability is not a random process, but a voluntary act which requires the support of science, technology, and proper organization."

Aging: 12 months in 25 hl oak casks.

Tasting Notes: 100%

Nerello Mascalese. With beautiful aromas of orange peel, cherries, and dried flowers follow through to a medium body, fine tannins, and a refined, subtle finish. This wine looks more like a rosato than a rosso. If you want to know what wine geeks mean when they speak about finesse in a wine, try this.

Reviews

Subtle aromas of orange peel, cherries, and dried flowers follow through to a medium body, fine tannins, and a refined, subtle finish. Such beauty. So drinkable and fine. Drink now. ~95 James Suckling.

Lithe and savory, this lovely red has enticing scents of Mediterranean scrub, wild berries, crushed stone, and eucalyptus. The polished, savory palate offers wonderful finesse, featuring wild strawberry, pomegranate and star anise alongside flinty mineral notes. Glossy tannins provide elegant support. Drink through 2027. ~92 Wine Enthusiast.

Pouring from the bottle with a thin, light ruby color, the 2019 Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese Ghiaia Nera is a finely textured wine. This delicate approach and those soft footprints make this bottle quite exciting to pour, especially as an easy companion to a homemade pasta dish. It offers wild cherry, tart berry, cassis, crushed stone, smoke and lavender essence. With 50,000 bottles produced, you get great value here. ~92 Robert Parker.

Bright shimmering cherry red. Finely drawn nose of red berries, cranberries, wild strawberries, hint of undergrowth, wet stone. Juicy start with grip, youthful tannins, good harmony at the beginning and during the finish, fine herbaceous, vertical finish. ~90 Falstaff.
