About the Wine

Over 39 years, David Hirsch has been quietly producing arguably the best Pinot Noir in the new world. Situated a half a mile above the San Andreas Fault, the legendary Hirsch Vineyard captures the complexity, power and energy needed to produce world class Pinot. The Hirsch ‘San Andreas Fault’ Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir displays depth and complexity only though to exist within the grand cru's of Burgundy. This wine is a can't miss for Pinotfile's alike!

72 acres make up the Hirsch Estate, divided into 67 individual farming blocks each with their own unique soil and aspect. This degree of fragmentation rivals the best vineyards of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Such complexity defines their farming and winemaking practices. By producing each block individually Hirsch captures the quintessential nature of terroir driven wines, delivering an honest and impeccable expression of Pinot Noir. Like Gillette, this Pinot is the best California can get!

Tasting notes: The 2017 Hirsch Pinot Noir is characterized by charming ripe fruit, supple tannins, and a juicy fruit character. An ideal wine for drinking at any point over the next ten years: it is wonderfully open and expressive already, with acid and structure to age for years to come.

Reviews

A homage to the great fault line near Hirsch, this pinot has a brambly, rich array of red cherries and some blue-fruit notes with fresh, sappy, forest aromas, too. The palate has plenty of punchy tannin and forthright, fresh, unwavering drive. Drink or hold. ~93JS

This is the largest production cuvée in the Hirsch portfolio. Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir San Andreas Fault has a delicately played nose with touches of cinnamon stick, dried leaves, perfumed earth and a mineral vein plus rose petal perfume, red berries and black fruit sparks. The palate is light to medium-bodied with delicate intensity and well-balanced fruit and earth character, knit by grainy tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long and nuanced. ~92RP
