About the Wine

"Based on 20+ years of tasting young Barolo vintages, my view is that 2016 is one of the most consistently outstanding vintages I have come across. It is simply hard to go wrong with Barolo in 2016." ~Antonio Galloni

2016 Barolos are starting to hit our shores, and BHW staff have been diligently sifting through the wines to bring you only the best.Serious collectors and lovers of Nebbiolo are wise to stock up on these wines as they will assuredly evaporate in short order. 2016 is a can't miss vintage.

La Biòca is a small winery in the Langhe. Located in Serralunga d'Alba, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved villages in the Langhe. La Bioca only produces wine from estate-owned vineyards located in the municipalities of Monforte d'Alba, Novello, La Morra, Barbaresco, and Roddino. Focusing on traditional Langhe varieties, such as Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Arneis, and Moscato their wines are born from rare native and old Piedmont vineyards. "Biòca" is a Piedmontese word, which means a determined person with a hard head, just like the winemaking spirit at La Bioca, constantly working to express the excellence of the Langhe.

The 2016 Aculei is blended from 5 different vineyards in Barolo. The grapes are rigorously hand-selected only using the best fruit for the final blend. The wine is produced under the guidance and of the new consultant, the internationally acknowledged oenologist Franco Bernabei.

Aging: 30 months in French oak botte & mixed oak tonneaux

Tasting notes: Red Wine. 100% Nebbiolo. The wine is pure granite red. On the nose, the wine is intense with classic Barolo characteristics; Dried rose peddles, raspberries, cassis, leather nutmeg, anise, and truffle. The wine is dry, harmonious, with an all-encompassing palate and a finish that goes for minutes! Ideal with truffle-based dishes, meat dishes, porcini mushrooms, seasoned cheeses, and is also a perfect fit with dry pastries or chocolate.

Reviews

One of the finest cohorts of wines in this year's DWWA was the magnificent collection of 2016 Barolo we had the chance to judge, and confining ourselves to just two wines in the Best of Show collection wasn't easy. The first of these is dark, vivid, amply constituted, and multi-dimensioned, with complex, close-woven aromas and a dense mesh of still-fruity flavors which ideally needs a year or two further to soften, though it is very approachable now. Look out for ample plum and pomegranate fruit, as well as Havana-leaf complexities in the finish. The way in which the tannins cling, densely and ripely, to those fruit flavors testifies both to 2016's generosity and to skilled vinification - and bodes well for the future. ~97 Decanter WWA

A beautiful red with cedar, meat, terra cotta, and leather. Medium to full body. Firm and silky and a fruity finish. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling
