About the Wine

Château Mouton-Rothschild’s neighbor, Château Grand-Puy Ducasse delivers the excellence Pauillac is famous for at a fraction of the cost. Pauillac is internationally recognized for producing wines of unparalleled quality and character and this second label from Grand-Puy Ducasse is no exception.

In the middle of the 17th century, Arnaud Ducasse bought a small house on the banks of the Gironde estuary in Pauillac from Jacques de Segur.  Never imagining then that it would be the start of a superb estate, sharing an appellation with three of the five First Growths in Bordeaux. Or that it would remain in his family for almost three centuries and earn a Fifth Growth classification in 1855.

The name Prelude comes from the winemaker's desire to introduce you to what Grand-Puy Ducasse has to offer without spending $80+on their Grand Vin. Made from the younger vines of the estate, this wine receives the same care as the Gran Vin at every stage. It is more supple than the Grand Vin while still showing the same qualities of elegance and complexity.

2015 was a fantastic vintage in Bordeaux, producing a historic number of perfect, 100 point wines and earning 94 points from Wine Enthusiast. Grand-Puy Ducasse’s idyllic vineyard sites, neighboring producers who's wines retail for $750+ a bottle, produces exceptional wines that are an unbeatable value. The vineyards are certified Organic & Biodynamic with an average vine age of 20+ years, all harvest is done by hand to select only the best fruit.

Aging: 18-24 months in French Oak, 40% New

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot. Soft and refined tannis. Cassis and ripe blackberry are vibrant on the nose with underlying notes of cedar and tobacco.

Reviews

The second wine of this Pauillac fifth-growth is made from the estate's young (20 years old) vineyards which border those of Châteaux Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite-Rothschild, and Pontet-Canet to the north. It's a forward, bold red with supple tannins, elegant oaking, and bright acidity to balance the generous, inky dark berry fruit and spiced plum palate. Lovely youthful drinking now, or keep it a few more years. Drinking Window 2019 - 2026 ~92 Decanter

Quite brambly summer-berry and dark-plum aromas with a thread of violets and cassis. The palate has a smooth, pastry-like tannin texture and is gently grainy and layered. Very fresh and elegant finish. Try from 2021. ~90 James Suckling
