About the Wine

Tuscany native Carlo Ferrini is an internationally famous wine expert and winemaker. Podere Sapaio has been a great success story in Bolgheri, with this wine landing on the Wine Spectator list of Top 100 wines two years in the row! Given that the Volpolo is a fraction of the cost of the super Tuscan wines from neighboring vineyards, this is truly a real deal steal.  A stellar example of Tuscany’s ability to make its own magic with traditional Bordeaux grapes, Volpolo’s dark fruits, minerals and herbs finish in the mouth with smooth and elegant tannins.

A big and persuasive wine, this Super Tuscan is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot and 15% Merlot. These traditional Bordeaux grapes create a beautiful expression of the Bolgheri Rosso D.O.C. terroir when grown in this region. An exciting combination of black currant, black cherry, violet, cedar and cigar box flavors highlight on the bright nose that evolves into dark fruit, herb and bitter chocolate hints in the mouth. A vivid but balanced acidity frames the smooth and elegant tannins on the finish.

Reviews

From the heart of Bolgheri an area where the grapes breathe the sea and the air. This magnificent “Super Tuscan” rose from the ground in the late 1990s. Innovation and passion is what sets this winery apart from others. The Podere Sapaio “Volpolo” 2015 shows exceptional depth. Dark, deep in colour it flashes hints of dark plums, ripe cherries, and toasted cedar. With the blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon the Merlot and Petit Verdot really balance the tannic structure on this wine. Great with roasted meats or sharp cheeses.

Fresh blackcurrant character as well as minerals, jasmine and some eucalyptus. Full-bodied with grippy tannins and a juicy, driven finish. Drink in 2020. 93JS
