About the Wine

Chateau La Gaffeliere is 1st Growth in Saint Emilion. This estate is steep in history, they're one of the oldest family-owned vineyards dating back as far as the 1400s. The Estate didn't start producing wine until the 17th century. This Gothic-styled Chateau had built a reputation as one of the finest producers in all of St-Emilion by the 18th century. The vineyards of this prestigious Chateau are planted to 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Chateau La Gaffeliere is one the premier producers in St-Emilion whose wines display great energy and structure capable of aging 30+ years!

This Château's second wine, Clos La Gaffeliere, was born in 1985. This outstanding second label is produced mainly from young vines. La Clos is harvested and produced according to the high standards set forth by the first label: pruning, cover, de-leafing, green harvest, and hand-picking. In the cellar, the same technical process sets the pace for successive stages of vinification.

This wine is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It is a “wine for pleasure” that can be enjoyed in its youth along with 10 years of aging potential.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Driven by ripe red fruits, bing cherry, cranberry, fresh rose peddle, smoked leather, tobacco leaf, espresso bean, and a hint of wet earth. The palate is full and rich, with silky smooth tannins and an impressively long finish. This wine is complex and filled with character.

Reviews

A medium-bodied red, offering deep, pretty fruit with walnut, wet-earth, mushroom and chocolate character. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit at the end. Beautiful depth to this. ~93-94 James Suckling.

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge lightening. Red cherries, some licorice, mineral touch, inviting bouquet. Juicy, round and approachable, fresh cherry fruit, fine tannins, pleasant acid structure, delicate nougat in the aftertaste, lemony touch, a versatile food accompaniment. ~93 Falstaff.

The second wine of La Gaffeliere, the 2019 Clos La Gaffeliere has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and bags of character all its own, featuring notes of redcurrant jelly, raspberry pie, Black Forest cake and underbrush with wafts of bouquet garni and cracked black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers plenty of juicy red and black fruits with lovely herbal sparks and an approachable texture of rounded tannins, finishing with enticing freshness. ~90-92 Robert Parker.

The 2019 Clos La Gaffeliere has a well-defined nose of blackberry, raspberry, and cedar scents, with touches of undergrowth coming through with time. The palate is fresh, vibrant, and quite saline in the mouth, with a finely proportioned finish. This is great value. ~91 Vinous Media.

The second wine of Château La Gaffelière, the 2019 Clos La Gaffeliere has soft, charming style that shows plenty of darker, almost blue fruits as well as notes of damp earth and leafy herbs, medium-bodied richness, light tannins, and solid length. It has plenty to love and is ideal for drinking over the coming 7-8 years. ~90 Jeb Dunnuck.

From the Malet Roquefort stable, this is the second wine of Canon la Gaffelière, in production since the 1980s, and with a blend that has more than 90% Merlot. It shows a lovely mix of gently smoked oak, coffee grounds, and vanilla but nothing too overpowering, with creamy damson fruits. Altogether a lovely entry point to its sibling. ~90 Decanter.
