The vines were planted in 2006 on limestone-rich soils on a slope next to the Pinot Noir in their Talinay vineyard. It somehow feels a lot more elegant, layered and complex than any of the other Syrahs, and if the nose is subtle, the palate is much more elegant, refined and velvety. This does not compare to any of their Syrahs, as the texture seems closer to a Pinot. There is something salty in the finish and also some earthy, graphite-like aromas and flavors that make it apart. The winery is located in the middle of their main vineyard, a 2,500-hectare agricultural property where they also grow Pisco grapes and olives. Here they have some 150 hectares of vineyards, not all used for their wines, as they also sell some grapes. There's also another vineyard, Talinay, with very chalky soils -- a rarity in Chile -- where they own 85 hectares. On top of that, in 2014 they purchased a vineyard in Maipo to produce mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, some 80 more hectares, so there will be some new wines from that property in the future. ~93pts WA

***Free Shipping on 12 btls of this wine***

Looking for that house red? Chile’s long, narrow, coastal geography has made the transportation of wines challenging over the centuries, though today it is a major exporter. To the west is the Pacific Ocean, to the east are the Andes. But the isolation has also meant that Chile vineyards have so far never been attacked by phylloxera, meaning that unlike viticulturalists in many other part of the world, Chilean vineyards can be planted with original rootstock, saving producers the laborious job of grafting vines onto phylloxera-resistant rootstocks. Chile started an appellation system in 1994, and there are five regions each with numerous sub-regions. The profile is austere and mineral, and sometimes they take time to open up. They are, of course, very young wines destined for a long life in bottle. The quality is extremely high, and it's a matter of preference as to which plot or vintage style you like best. 2014 is austere and a bit herbal, 2015 showed a little riper and 2016 seems to be the most complete of the three, with super sharp, linear whites and austere reds for the long haul. The 2014s were released a while ago, the 2015s are arriving on the market right now and the 2016s will take about one more year to hit the shelves. I'm talking reds, as the whites should be released by December 2018. Just as I saw last time, the Appellation range is clearly the sweet spot, especially in 2016, when the wines clearly overdeliver. And it is impressive how the character of each wine is maintained and identifiable in every vintage. ~95, WA

***Free Shipping on 12 bottles of this wine***

About the Wine

Birthed as a project between Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA (owners of Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro S.A. in 1997 with a view to create an exceptional Franco-Chilean wine called Almaviva.

The name comes from Count Almaviva who is the hero of The Marriage of Figaro, the famous play by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later turned into an opera by the genius of Mozart.

The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile’s ancestral history, with three reproductions of a stylized design, which symbolizes the vision of the earth and the cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. The élevage was shortened to 16 months, and they decreased the percentage of new French barrels used—down to 77% from the 82% in the previous year. The wine is fresher and less marked by the oak, a more fluid version, with fine tannins. This is a little different, a lighter and fresher year. It was a very dry winter, complicated by rains. This has contained power, very accessible tannins and no green notes at all. It's young but accessible and should develop nicely in bottle, as it has the balance and freshness. It's made like a Grand Cru Burgundy, offered at a fraction of the cost. The wine has a lemon curd nose with an inviting dose of toasted oak and vanilla wafer. The aromatics carry into the mouth with apple tart and tropical fruit. The persistence is at least 60 seconds, with bright green apple acidity and a mouth watering finish that makes you want to drink more. Pair with any soft cheese like Brie, or on its own with a roast chicken.

About the Winery

Chile has produced wine since the 16th century, when Spanish conquistadores brought grape vines and established vineyards. Sweet wines were favored until well into the 19th century, when French immigrants began making dry wines with a decidedly French character. Chile has attracted investment from European and American producers, including Robert Mondavi Winery, Kendall-Jackson, Lafite-Rothschild and Miguel Torres.

***Free Shipping on 12 bottles of this wine***

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0646/products/1_0e9397f9-7d02-4c2f-a7c2-2bdb907ab774.jpg?v=1605952591
2018-bodega-polo-herencia-respeto-blend-de-blancas-valle-de-uco-mendoza
2018 Bodega Polo Herencia Respeto Blend de Blancas Valle de Uco Mendoza

New Arrival from Outstanding Argentine vintage

Irrigated by Andean snowmelt

Sourced from prized La Consulta vineyard in Uco Valley

BHW Direct Import Exclusive

Free Shipping on 12 bottles

About the Wine

Bodega Polo is a new BHW Direct Import from a winery with a long history and vineyards located in the Beverly Hills of Uco Valley in La Consulta.
