About the Wine

Bob Lindquist is a pioneer in Santa Barbara winemaking. He planted some of the first cool climate Syrah in California at the Bien Nacido vineyard in 1997. He became known as one of founding Rhone Rangers, demonstrating that Rhone varietals could succeed in California.

"Qupe" is a Chumash Native American word for poppy, the California state flower often found in the area. The Sawyer-Lindquist vineyard is in the Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo. It was planted to highlight cool climate Syrah and is farmed biodynamically. The vineyard is certified biodynamic by Demeter.

Reviews

Coming from a vineyard located in the southern end of the Edna Valley, just across from Alban Vineyards, the 2012 Syrah Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard is 100% Syrah that saw 17 months in 40% new French oak. It's has a tight, austere style as well as medium-bodied richness, outstanding fruit intensity, and lots of white pepper, black raspberry, bacon fat and hints of olive. It's another classy Syrah from Bob that's stays true to the house style. I suspect it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and drink nicely through 2027. ~90WA
