About the Wine

Lagarde is one of the oldest wineries in the Mendoza region with Malbec vines over 100 years old. The Pescarmona family acquired Lagarde in 1969. They quickly become a trendsetter by being the first Latin American producer to plant non-traditional varieties such as Viognier and Moscato Bianco. Today the winery and estate are run by third-generation Pescarmonas, sisters Sofia and Lucila Pescarmona. Under their direction, Lagarde creates exceptional terroir character wines that reflect a strong sustainable commitment to the land and its people.

Lagarde's Primeras Vinas Malbec is an exemplification of the work and time invested in a special vineyard, the age of the vines, and treatment. The production takes between 16 and 18 months in French oak barrels, with at least 12 months of storage in a controlled environment, resulting in a phenomenal wine with ample aging potential that can be enjoyed for 10-15 years.

Aging: 16-18 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes: Red Wine. 100% Malbec. In the glass, the wine displays an intense red core with violet reflections. On the nose, a floral bouquet with mineral notes leaps out of the glass. On the palate, the wine is elegant and bold with a medium to long finish. The oak influence is subtle and perfectly balanced.

Reviews

When winemaker Juan Roby began to see the potential of the grapes growing in his vineyard in one of the highest parts of Gualtallary, he thought it was a good idea to let the flavors speak for themselves as much as possible. And so he has harvested earlier and aged the wines in casks to keep the oak out of the spotlight. The result is a wine with a strong mineral component. Rather than fruit, what you taste here is coal and stone. The texture is tense and rigid, with piercing, firm, vertical tannins that speak of the vineyard’s chalky soils. It’s a tremendous wine that goes beyond malbec to tell us about the inhospitable cold and desert place it came from. ~96Descorchados

I find the 2016 Primeras Viñas Malbec Gualtallary to be superb, representing the variety, place, and vintage faithfully. It's floral and perfumed, with subtle chalky minerality. It matured in large oak vats for 16 to 18 months ~94RP
