About the Wine

Fulvio Marcucci in the 1960s was way ahead of the pack. He and his wife, Renata, purchased some 25 acres of woodland that formed a natural amphitheater on the southwest side of Montalcino, with an eye to planting vines and olive trees. Fast forward nearly 50 years and these vineyards are in their prime, and Fulvio’s granddaughter, Gemma, is crafting vibrant, energetic Brunello wines that are now starting to make waves in the wider wine world. Accompanied by her father, Giancarlo, the duo is quickly becoming one of the most sought after producers from Tuscany. Find out why the wine world is going nuts for this up & coming producer.

The three estate vineyards were planted between 1968 and 2000, and today average 20 to 50 years in age. The Marcucci family produces less than 6,000 bottles of Brunello each vintage from a small eight acres of vines. Compared to the majority of Brunello producers San Carlo's production is minuscule. These wines are ready to bless the palates of the lucky few who can capture these elusive wines!

San Carlo's 2015 Brunello is cultivated from three estate-owned and planted vineyards. Totaling eight acres at some 1,050 feet, the hand-harvested vines are located near the small town of Tavernelle, southwest of Montalcino. Surrounded by nearly 20 acres of forest the complex soils are a mix of sand, limestone, and clayFermented takes place with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks producing an authentic and pure expression of one of Italians most sought-after wines.

Aging: 36 months in Slavonian Oak

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Aromas of small red fruits, summer berry, autumn leaves, blond tobacco, spice. Structured yet suave, fine-grained tannins. Perfect alongside grilled steak, air-dried salami, or wild mushroom risotto.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market."

Reviews

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is savory, dark, and almost animalistic, with blackberries and currants giving way to crushed stone, licorice, and smoked meats. It’s silky in texture, with depths of spicy black fruits complemented by hints of sour citrus and stimulating acids. There’s so much to like here, as residual acids keep the experience fresh in spite of grippy tannins and youthful restraint. It’s briary at times yet sapid, salty, and unbelievably persistent. San Carlo really knocked this one out of the park. The 2016 spent three years in 30-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels and one year in bottle before release. ~94 Vinous Media
