About the Wine

Prior to the Renaissance, the Contucci family's Montepulciano roots can be traced back to the 11th century and have been cultivating wine in the region since 1646. The historic cellars are located via the main square of Montepulciano and were constructed under a palace once home to Pope Julius III. 2015 Mulinvecchio is one of the estates' top bottlings, and with just 5,000 bottles being produced from this minuscule vineyard, you won't want to let this one pass you by.

The impressive Alamanno Contucci is currently at the helm. In his other role as President of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the body responsible for the region’s wines, he was responsible for improving not only the quality of Contucci, but the quality of Vino Nobile as a whole. As you’d expect with the estate’s history, they produce a traditional Vino Nobile, unhurried and structured.

The family maintains sixteen hectares of well-situated vineyards just south of town and thrive with historic plantings of Sangiovese and numerous local varieties. With a robust commitment to balancing tradition while allowing for innovation, the winery proudly offers highly esteemed bottlings of Vino Nobile, Rosso di Montepulciano DOC, Vin Santo DOCG as well as spirited whites.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of underbrush, pressed violet, blackberry, baked earth and new leather lead the nose of this classic wine. The structured, elegant palate offers succulent black cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon, clove, and a hint of anise alongside tightly knit but polished tannins that need to unwind. It’s already tempting but give this time to develop even more.

Reviews

Rose petal, wild herb, red berry, and pipe tobacco aromas are front and center on this fragrant, elegantly structured wine. The smooth, linear palate delivers raspberry compote, pomegranate, cinnamon, and white pepper alongside a backbone of taut but refined tannins and fresh acidity. Give this time to develop to its full potential. Drink 2023–2035. ~96 Wine Enthusiast, #22 of Top 100 Cellar Selection.
