About the Wine

“Our wines already exist in nature, in our plants and our vineyards. We worry about one thing and one thing only: taking care of it, so that it grows strong.”

Conte d’Attimis-Maniago’s philosophy is clear: Create exceptional and well-crafted wines, combine the tradition of the region with their own new and creative methods, and transmit to the consumers the greatness of the land.

This family winery is located in Buttrio, a mountainous area in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia dedicated to the cultivation of wine grapes. Although its history dates back more than 300 years, the first bottles of Conte d’Attimis-Maniago were released until 1930.

This growing winery comprises more than 270 acres of vineyards and is planted with typical grapes of the region such as Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Picolit, and Pignolo, among others. The terroir is perfect for these grapes to thrive, especially the Pignolo, which has become a flagship varietal for the winery. The vineyard is managed with environmentally friendly practices and it is located on a foothill area where the soil is composed of marl and sandstone with a predominantly clayey component.

2009 Conte d’Attimis-Maniago Pignolo is a wine designed with special care and attention, the harvest is carried out in October, when the grapes begin to raisin, picking them manually and selecting only the best bunches; the wine goes through 24 to 30 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Pignolo. The bouquet is expansive with notes of ripe red fruit, plum, fruits of the forest, and mulberries, all elegantly enriched with a soft spiciness. It is powerful on the palate, extremely enveloping, balanced, and soft. It has an excellent embellished finish and, as is a feature of this grape, a pleasant freshness and rich tannins that are lively but silky, guaranteeing a long-lasting wine. This wine pairs with game and grilled red meat, mature cheeses.

Reviews

Inky-ruby. Aromas and flavors of savory herbs, grilled meat, super ripe plum, crystallized blackberry, graphite and herbs. Riper than D’Attimis Maniago’s Schioppettino and richer than the Tazzelenghe, this lacks the fruity exuberance of the former and the mesmerizing refinement of the latter. Finishes rather suave and broad but with uncanny precision and length. This ultra-smooth Pignolo avoids the pitfall of overripe fruit and weedy notes that all too often plague wines made with this variety.Well done. ~ 93 Vinous Media

A release of some 3,000 bottles, the Conte d'Attimis-Maniago 2009 Friuli Colli Orientali Pignolo has submitted to a soft and relaxed state, thanks to the long decade of aging since the harvest. There's an almost exotic element to the fruit, with mulling spice, baker's chocolate, crème de cassis and a very clearly delivered hint of cherry liqueur. The primary fruit has faded, but the wine compensates nicely with elegant tertiary aromas that never feel tired or heavy. Indeed, the wine lays out plenty of freshness over a mid-weight texture to keep things lively enough for a typical Friulian frico—a cheese and potato pie. ~92 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
