About the Wine

Created by Aldo Bucci the Collemattoni Estate was founded in 1982. Collemattoni means the "hills of iron" due to the iron influence in the soils and the burnt siena color of the soils. Today, the estate is run by Marcello Bucci,Aldo's son, focusing on a winemaking philosophy that allows for technological advancement but in a way that exemplifies a sense of place and respect for the area. The estate is located on the south side of Montalcino on the hilltops just outside Sant’Angelo in Colle. The small estate produces only two wines: Brunello and Rosso, combined with an extra virgin olive oil and a Grappa di Brunello pomace.

2015 was not only a great year for wine throughout the whole of Europe but is being called the best vintage ever for Brunello di Montalcino! Now is the time to stock up on 2015 Brunelli; these wines will only get more valuable as they continue to age into the sensational wines we know they're going to be!

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."

Aging: 30 Months in Large Slavonian Oak Barrels

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. The wine vibrates a brilliant red with burgundy reflects. The nose is penetrating with aromas of wild black fruits, black cherry, tobacco, rose peddles, and noble wood. The wine is warm, dry, and persistent with fine tannins and a long finish.

Reviews

Good full red. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, kirsch, mocha, and herbs on the inviting nose. Despite its size, this is graceful and impeccably built, with very precise flavors of red plum, blueberry, milk chocolate, and minerals that expand and broaden on the long, seductive finish. Outstanding Brunello that offers both size and refinement. In my opinion, Collemattoni is a very underrated, off the radar Brunello estate but its wines deserve to be better known. ~95 Vinous Media

This is round, evoking plum and blackberry flavors, with vibrant acidity lending focus. Iron and tobacco elements join in as the finish builds, revealing dense, lively tannins. Best from 2023 through 2040. 2,300 cases made, 500 cases imported ~93 Wine Spectator

In addition to achieving organic certification in 2012, Collemattoni's new cellar was built with rainwater recovery pipes and generates 80% of its own electricity through biomass energy and solar panels. Assembled from five vineyards all located in the southern reaches of Montalcino, this captures the intense ripeness of the vintage with sweet cherry fruit, chocolatey tannins and a creamy texture. Yet there is a refreshing juiciness and lift of woodland herbs underneath. A curvaceous, exuberant, jolly wine with lots of purity. Drinking Window 2021 - 2031. ~Decanter
