About the Wine

The Spitfire Cabernet Sauvignon from the historic Meyer Family is a perfectly built Cab constructed with powerful fruit-forward notes harmoniously intermingled with American Oak delivering an Oakville expression few producers can capture. The Meyer family, famous for founding and creating the captivating Silver Oak wines, have continued their story as one of Napa's premier family-owned & operated estates. The Meyer's focus on limited production Cabernet in the Yorkville Highlands and Oakville appellations. The 2018 Spitfire is the perfect example of this family's mesmerizing style, one that launched and created one of Napa's most desired wines. This is Cab is a crowd-pleasing behemoth that will deliver joy and appreciate the lucky few who indulge in its pleasures.

Oakville’s unique combination of well-drained, sandy-gravelly soils and the cooling effects of fog and breezes from the San Pablo Bay—not to mention the stellar reputation of its wines—have earned this tiny section of Napa Valley the status as California’s most revered viticultural area. The Meyer Family has farmed and produced Cabernet Sauvignon from Bonny’s Vineyard in the heart of Oakville since the mid-1970s, and over that period of time, they have contributed significantly to both the reputation of the Oakville AVA and the definition of its red wines.

Meyer Family Cellars is one of the leading artisanal wineries in California, turning heads with their luscious wines from the up and coming, Yorkville HighlandsKnown as the gateway to Anderson Valley, the Yorkville Highlands is a picturesque region whose porous soil and cool climate generate perfect conditions for viticulture. Second-generation winemaking duo Matt and Karen Meyer continue to build upon their family's legacy, imparting the wisdom passed down from legendary Justin and Bonny Meyer. Their wines incorporate “old world” balance, acidity, and minerality with “new world” ripeness and persistent fruit. Their wines are exciting, guaranteed to please, and unforgettable!

Aging: 22 months in 50% new American Oak

Tasting notes: Lively, red-black fruit aromas immediately jump out of the glass, followed by juicy, palate-coating fruit and firm tannins that are the hallmarks of this phenomenal vintage. Blackberry, currant, and cassis make up the complex mid-palate, deepened by notes of licorice and eucalyptus. Two years’ aging in American oak adds balancing touches of cedar and spice, along with some additional tannin that will help this delicious Cabernet Sauvignon age well for a decade or more—though it’s also built to enjoy with a steak tonight!

Reviews

“In 2006, he (Matt) crushed his first wine grown entirely in the Yorkville Highlands appellation, where his winery, Meyer Family Cellars, is located. He kicked off 2007 by celebrating his 30th birthday and releasing an impressive Mendocino County Syrah, the first wine he made entirely from bud break to bottling... At one time, everyone who cared about American wine knew Justin Meyer's name, because he co-founded the iconic Silver Oak winery in Napa Valley in 1972. He was also a larger-than-life personality who helped create the Napa Valley we know today, and thereby influenced the course of California wine." Learn More ~San Francisco Chronicle.
