About the Wine

Podere Sapaio was born in 1999, after Massimo Piccin convinced his family to help him invest in the prized terroir of Bolgheri, creating a wine estate in what is one of Italy’s most famed viticultural areas. A native of Veneto, Massimo always felt a deep passion for wine and wanted to direct this passion toward his own high-quality wine project.

All of Podere Sapaio's vineyards were planted between 2000 and 2005 under the supervision of Carlo Ferrini with a density of about 7500 plants per hectare and utilizing wooden trellising. The training is double cordon at 45-50 cm from the ground, allowing the vines to maintain a healthy balance between leaves and fruit

Tuscany native Carlo Ferrini is an internationally famous wine expert and winemaker. Podere Sapaio has been a great success story in Bolgheri, with this wine landing on the Wine Spectator list of Top 100 in 2014 and 2015, two years in a row! Given that the Volpolo is a fraction of the cost of the super Tuscan wines from neighboring vineyards, this is truly a real deal steal. A stellar example of Tuscany’s ability to make its own magic with traditional Bordeaux grapes, Volpolo’s dark fruits, minerals, and herbs finish in the mouth with smooth and elegant tannins.

A big and persuasive wine, this Super Tuscan is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, and 15% Merlot. These traditional Bordeaux grapes create a beautiful expression of the Bolgheri Rosso D.O.C. terroir when grown in this region.

Aging: 16 months in French Oak Barriques

Tasting Notes: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, and 15% Merlot. An exciting combination of black currant, black cherry, violet, cedar, and cigar box flavors highlighted on the bright nose that evolves into dark fruit, herb, and bitter chocolate hints in the mouth. A vivid but balanced acidity frames the smooth and elegant tannins on the finish.

Reviews

It shines in the sensory richness of cherries, black cherries, raspberries, and currants melted with walnut and wild violet. Full body, soft tannins of good workmanship, and an enveloping finish with good substance and matter. Drink now or get old. ~94 WinesCritic.com

The organic Podere Sapaio 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Merlot and Petit Verdot. This vintage shows nice freshness and brightness and a good dose of extra fruit weight and concentration. The bouquet is clean and precise with dark cherry, blackcurrant, and plum. The fruit is neatly framed by spice and sweet tobacco. This is a great vintage of the Tuscan-souled Volpolo. ~93+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A delicious, juicy red with currant and berry character. Some sage undertones. Medium-bodied with medium, round tannins, and a fruity finish. From organically grown grapes. Delicious now, but better in a year or two. ~92 James Suckling
