About the Wine

“This goes straight to the premier league of Pinot Noir from Chile”, “It breaks the mold. Bravo!”, “A wonder that is among the best Pinots in the world”, “Well-judged freshness and gentle mouthfeel”,are just some of the phrases that some of the world's most outstanding wine critics like Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Vinous Media used to describe this hidden gem.

2018 Tabali 'Talinay Pai' Pinot Noir is Tabalí's newest label, and it is very clear that it has been an extremely pleasant surprise for all the wine critics and savvy wine drinkers who have had the great pleasure of tasting it. Will you be one of the fortunate ones?

In just a short time since its release, it has been named the “Best Red Wine”, “Best Pint Noir from Chile” and even “Best Wine of the Year” by the important South American Wine Guide, Descorchados.

2018 Tabali 'Talinay Pai' Pinot Noir is produced with grapes from a massive selection that the winemaker Felipe Mülle made from two vineyards in Burgundy (which happen to be home to some of the best Pinots in the world): Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin. Later, the vines were planted at the Talinay vineyard in the Limarí Valley.

Tabalí has an enormous focus on quality over quantity. The Winery is a small-scale, exclusive, family winery focused on detail. It is built in such a way that the fruit and wine are transported by gravity. The winery aims to avoid any unnecessary pumping and relies on nature to do the work wherever possible.

Felipe Müller, Tabalí’s winemaker since 2006, was born and raised in Santiago, Chile’s capital. Today, at the age of 41, he is considered one of the country´s most influential and important winemakers.

In 2001 he joined Viña De Martino as the second winemaker, in charge of viticulture as well as the vinification for red and white wines. In this winery, he worked with winemaker Marcelo Retamal, and formed a bold and renowned "Wine Dupla". Together they discovered new wines, studied various valleys and regions of Chile, and vinifies around 350 vineyards throughout the country.

Felipe harvested two famous Chateaux Grand Cru Classé in Saint Emilion, France: Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere and Chateau La Mondotte.

Felipe Müller was named ‘Best Winemaker of the Year’ in the sixteenth version of “Guía de Vinos de Chile 2010”, Chile’s oldest and most prestigious wine industry publication. This distinction was an important recognition for the enthusiasm, passion, and dedication he puts in crafting wines. “Wine is my passion and an important part of my life. I feel capable of leveraging the knowledge I’ve built throughout these many years", says Felipe.

In the year 2011, Felipe was appointed Manager Director, keeping his position as Chief Winemaker. From then Felipe was not only responsible for the quality of the wines but also for the global strategy of the company.

In January 2014 Felipe Müller was chosen ‘Best Young Winemaker’ (next to Aurelio Montes who was chosen Best Senior Winemaker).

Tasting Notes: 100% Pinot Noir. The nose is attractive with brooding cherry fruit, floral lift and an underlying stoney minerality. The palate shows elegance with delicious red berry fruits, layered upon precise minerality and freshness. It’s a very long and clean wine with extremely fine, chalky tannins.

Reviews

“The Best Wine of the Year”, “Best Red Wine”, “Best Pinot Noir from Chile” ~98 Descorchados.

“The 2018 Talinay Pai Pinot Noir is a new Pinot Noir from their Talinay vineyard, though the name is still not 100% finalized. It was produced with grapes from two massal selections from Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy that were planted ungrafted and with a very high density of 12,500 plants per hectare on a steep slope (30%) inside the Talinay estate vineyard. It's a unique 1.15 hectares of vines that were planted in 2012, and the first commercial wine was produced in 2018. It fermented with 40% full clusters with native yeasts and matured in used French oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is 12.5% alcohol and has very good freshness. It has a meaty, characterful nose that is complex and nuanced, with red fruit and a spicy touch. The palate is truly mineral and austere, with deep flavors and super tasty finish. This goes straight to the premier league of Pinot Noir form Chile. It's an impressive debut, truly spectacular and with a completely different personality, keeping the Talinay saltines and austerity with added complexity and elegance. It breaks the mold. Bravo!” ~96 Wine Advocate.

“Key to this 2018 Pinot Noir is the selection massale of Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, planted directly into the soil where the limestone is at its densest (between 12 and 25%) on a hillside to the north of the colder coastal mountain range. The winemaking technique is Burgundian in style, including whole bunches and a degree of punch-down. Wild cherry in color, the nose conveys suggestions of damp earth, undergrowth, red fruit and herbs plus hints of roses, sweet spices and sandalwood. Chalky on the palate, it has a well-judged freshness and gentle mouthfeel. This is a direct, balanced wine; a secret that will be available from March 2020.” ´~93, Vinous Media.
