About the Wine

Chateau Cantenac Brown is a third-growth Grand Cru Classe in Margaux. The Chateau is noteworthy for its unique Tudor style designed by the former Scottish owner, a painter named John Lewis Brown. There have been three owners since 1989 and the current owner is Tristan Le Lous since 2019. Each ownership change has brought new investments and improvements in the winery and vineyards. Jose Sanfins has overseen the management of the property since 2006.

In 2020, a new cellar has been built using the raw earth. This eco-friendly design uses a rammed-earth technique to create a gravity-fed cellar.

Located next door to Brane Cantenac, this Chateau has produced some outstanding quality and value wines, especially in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019.

The vineyard is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc

Aging: 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% new.

Intense flavors of coffee, toasted almonds, and red fruit flavors. Precise tannins and natural acidity. Graceful development of tertiary flavors of tobacco leaf, leather, and tea leaves make this a wonderful wine to drink in 2023 and beyond.

The nose is elegant, beautifully racy and offers power (full of finesse), deepness, a beautiful finesse of the grain as well as a small spicy side, complexity, delicacy, and a beautiful stretchy side. It reveals notes of wild blackberry, small wild black fruits, and small notes of violet plum associated with small touches of wild strawberry, quite ripe cherry, green pepper, almost camphor as well as discreet hints of grilled, underwood, a subtle hint of Badiane and a very discreet hint of rosewood. The palate is fruity, elegant, beautifully built and offers a beautiful definition, matter, a very beautiful finesse of the grain, silkiness as well as elegance, a beautiful power (full of finesse/elegance), delicacy, tension, a beautiful tannic frame, a finesse in its power, suavity, fullness, and suavity. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of bright blackberry, juicy wild cassis, and small notes of small dense black fruits associated with touches of dark chocolate, caramelization, cardamom, brazil pepper, very discreet hints of camphor, black tea, a subtle hint of vanilla, underwood and a very discreet hint of black tapenade (bitterness of black olive). One of the finest wines to come from Cantenac Brown for many years, this is powerful and dense, dominated by Cabernet Franc tannins and fruits. Beautiful dark inky purple with ruby highlights. The difference with 2009 is clear in terms of structure, style, and knitted-down fruit. They are both brilliant, and quality-wise it's hard to pick as they have such different personalities. Higher acidity in 2010 set against confident tannins means your mouth is watering by the mid-palate and it doesn't let up. Tons of black fruits and evident spice, slate, cigar box, and licorice bud, savory and still zipped up. It needs a few more years in the bottle before it will really start to soften. 45% of the harvest in the 1st wine, 60% new oak. ~94 Jane Anson, Decanter Magazine

A wine with firm tannins that are polished and reserved yet there's an underlying richness of fruit. Plums, blueberries, and citrus character. Some tar too. Juicy and delicious to taste. Try in 2016. ~94 James Suckling

The 2010 Cantenac Brown feels a little muted on the nose compared to its peers, but with modest aeration, it develops very attractive, leafy black fruit, tertiary in style and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well-judged acidity, and plenty of substance towards the finish. I love the cohesion and focus of this Margaux. I wrote to buy this after its impressive showing at Southwold in 2014 - yet another blind tasting confirms its pedigree. Shows blackberry, treacle tart, and licorice aromas. Full-bodied, with wonderful vanilla, berry, and milk chocolate character, followed by a long finish. Needs time to develop. Best after 2010. 10,000 cases made. ~91 Wine Spectator
