As usual, I’m able to taste the different components, and while the differences in each sample were striking, the quality wasn’t; each sample showed full-bodied richness, gorgeous concentration, ripe tannin, and impeccable purity. Possessing a sexy, voluptuous style, it’s a hypothetical mix of the 2009 and 2010.

One of my favorite visits during my trip through the Northern Rhône is with Jean-Louis Chave and Family. This iconic estate continues to produce reference point wines from Hermitage and more and more St Joseph, where Jean-Louis has spent an incredible amount of time and effort over the past decade or more. Looking at the vintages reviewed here, the 2015s were all tasted from barrel and are spectacular wines. Both Gérard and Jean-Louis compared this vintage to a mix of 2009 and 2010, and when I asked if there were any similarities to 1990, both commented that the tannins in 2015 were more ripe and supple. I suspect that 2015 will slot in among 1990, 2003, 2009, and 2010 as one of the greatest wines from the estate, and readers owe it to themselves to have at least a few bottles in the cellar. As to the St Josephs, the quality continues to soar, and the big question will be if they decide to release single-vineyard cuvées. I sincerely hope they do, as these two vineyards (Beshesson, located north of St-Jean-de-Muzols and Le Clos, located just south of Mauves) are singular beauties that I’d love readers to taste. 97-100 WA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0646/products/2015_Dom._JL_Chave_Hermitage_Rouge_d4d5933d-7612-4119-b24f-866e1c6f43f6.png?v=1605956159
2011-ogier-dampuis-syrah-de-seyssuel-lame-soeur-syrah-1-5l-magnum
2011 Ogier d'Ampuis Syrah de Seyssuel L'Ame Soeur Syrah 1.5L MAGNUM

About the Wine

In 1982, after years of selling his grapes to the négoces, Michel Ogier decided to start making his own wine under his own label. This region will most likely receive its own appellation in the near future. Elegant and finesse-driven, with hints of crushed flowers, olive, underbrush and copious red and black fruits, this medium to full-bodied beauty has fine tannin, a seamless texture and ample length on the finish. It can be consumed now, or cellared for upwards of a decade. One of the next generation of winemakers to come up through the ranks by working with his father, the young, yet talented, Stephane Ogier (who is one of the youngest vignerons in the appellation) has been fully in control at this brilliant estate since around 2003. Covering roughly 7 acres in Cote Rotie, there are new plantings just now coming on line, both in Cote Rotie and in the surrounding regions as well. In addition, they are in the process of building a completely new cellar located on the western edge of Ampuis. There’s lots going on here, and if you’re a young wine lover today, count yourself lucky that there are young vignerons of this caliber out there. Looking at the 2011s, these show slightly more linear profiles than the 2012s, yet both vintages possess fantastic purity of fruit and overall elegant profiles. ~92 pts, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0646/products/2011-ogier-d-ampuis-syrah-de-seyssuel-l-ame-soeur-syrah-1-5l-magnum-1.jpg?v=1606022891
2014-m-chapoutier-saint-joseph-les-granits-rouge
2014 M. Of course it sees aging in new oak barrels, as La Gardine was one of the first to use new oak for its Chateauneuf du Pape, and while the wine can be somewhat internationally styled and oaky in its youth, the wood does get absorbed as the wine ages, and after a decade there is no doubt it is a southern Rhone wine with plenty of Provencal typicity in it. At about age 7-8, the aromas of black cherries and other black fruits intermixed with smoky garrigue notes come to the forefront. ~91+ Robert Parker, WA Drink 2012-2027

***Free Shipping on 12 or more bottles of this wine***

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0646/products/1.BHWWineBottle_3174dacd-2a38-43ea-aa60-0e4b85bf044d.jpg?v=1628775456
2005-chateau-de-la-gardine-cuvee-generation-chateauneuf-du-pape-rouge-magnum-1-5-liter
2005 Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Magnum 1.5 Liter

Old Vine, Organic Viticulture

Prime Drinking window NOW!

Equal Parts Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre

Homage to Grandpa Philippe Brunel

Free Shipping on 12 or more bottles of this wine

About the Wine

The winemaking tradition of the Brunel family dates back to the 17th century. As one might expect, it is modern in style yet fabulously concentrated displaying notes of soy, creme de cassis, white chocolate, new saddle leather, graphite and spice box. Extremely full-bodied, dense and heady, this massive Chateauneuf will need 8-10 years of cellaring (my 1998 Cuvee des Generations is just beginning to show some maturity). This stunning 2010 should last 30-35 years, and if you are laying down any wine for your children, this might be a consideration. One of the largest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape, Chateau de la Gardine (which has a history dating back to the late 1600s) owns over 120 acres in Chateauneuf du Pape, where they enjoy a long track record of exceptional success. Remarkably, the Brunel family that owns this estate has been vineyard owners since 1670, acquiring La Gardine in 1945. Little has changed in the thirty years I have been covering Chateauneuf du Pape other than the fact that they have introduced a totally unsulphured cuvee, Peur Bleu, and their blockbuster l’Immortelle. The intention is to use small oak casks and make a more modern-styled wine with aging potential of three decades or more. Despite the use of their own bottle form (that varies considerably from the type of bottle used by most Chateauneuf du Pape producers), they age the l’Immortelle in a truncated oak vat and the unsulphured cuvee in 600-liter demi-muids. The 2010s are of high quality across the board. Except for the Traditional cuvees, they are long-term propositions for serious connoisseurs who have the necessary wine storage facilities to give these wines some time to come into full maturity. ~94+ Robert Parker Drink 2020-2055

***Free Shipping on 12 or more bottles of this wine***

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0646/products/2010ChateaudelaGardineCuveeGenerationChateauneufduPapeRouge.jpg?v=1605911613
2013-chateau-de-la-gardine-cuvee-generation-chateauneuf-du-pape-rouge
2013 Chateau de la Gardine Cuvee Generation Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge

Old Vine, Organic Viticulture

Prime Drinking Window NOW

Homage to Grandpa Philippe Brunel

Free Shipping on 12 or more bottles of this wine

About the Wine

The winemaking tradition of the Brunel family dates back to the 17th century. Reminiscent of a more backwards, tight, focused, and granite-driven year (I asked Jean-Louis if there was a similar vintage he could recall, he commented that he couldn't think of one), it has solid ripeness in its aromas and flavors, good sweetness in its tannin, and a great finish. I suspect it will need 7-8 years of cellaring and keep for 20-25 years or more. ~94-97 Robert Parker

Solidly built, with a serious bolt of smoldering charcoal through the core of dark cherry, plum, and blackberry preserves. As I think the list of wines demonstrate, this is a huge lineup, yet the theme across the entire range is incredible quality. Looking at the top Côte Rôties, the current releases in bottle are the 2012s and these are rich, supple, sexy, even flamboyant wines that will be relatively approachable in their youth, yet have broad drink windows. The 2013s are much more backward and restrained, and built for the long haul, but the long élevage favored at this estate is certainly helping to soften the tannin and give the wines a suppler texture. As to the 2014s, I was shocked at the depth and density this team was able to get in these wines, but this is another vintage that will be approachable in its youth. Lastly, and from vintage described by Marcel as the best of his lifetime (how’s that for perspective?), the 2015s are inky and primordial, with mind-boggling depth and density. These will be reviewed two to three more times before release, but start saving today! Lastly, it’s also worth pointing out that the estate has started utilizing a new cork technique that guarantees no TCA. This doesn’t come cheap and is close to two Euros per cork, but it’s just another example of the attention to detail and the level of effort that this estate puts forth to ensure the quality in the bottle.
