About the wine

Few Rhône Valley producers can compare to the history and pedigree of Ogier. The family name dates to 800 A.D. when “Ogier the Dane” came to fight with Charlemagne’s soldiers in the Basque Country, and on his way back home, settled in southeastern France’s Massif Central region. Antoine Ogier, a distant descendant of Ogier the Dane, entered the wine business in 1859, purchasing a cooperage and establishing “OGIER” as a wine producer in the nearby Rhône Valley.

After more than 160 years, Ogier has grown to become one of the leading producers in the Rhône Valley. Most of its land holdings are in the Southern Rhône area producing wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Lirac. The estate quietly produces wine from 100% organic grapes and produces wine in a very traditional method. Ogier’s wines are an ode to finesse, elegance and freshness.

Gigondas is often thought of like the younger brother to Chateauneuf du PapeSitting just outside of Chateauneuf du Pape with a slightly more focused approach on blending just Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre instead of the 13 varieties allowed in CDP. The Vineyards here are located in the hills and have a bit more clay in the soil.

Tasting Notes: 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre. Elegant and complex nose with aromas of fruits, kirsch, and hints of brushwood and menthol notesRound and full-bodied, and at the same time very elegant and quite fresh. Long and fruity finish with hints of vanilla.

Reviews

Packed with plum, blueberry, and blackberry reduction flavors, forming a large, fleshy core that is in turn wrapped with licorice snap and roasted apple wood notes. A large swath of tobacco shows through the finish, which has cut and drive. Best from 2020 through 2035. 1,600 cases made, 400 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator

Dark ruby. Aromas of blackberry, Asian spices, and garrigue are lifted by a sexy floral note and a hint of smoky minerality. Supple and expansive on the palate, offering ripe, appealingly sweet dark berry, cola, and spice cake flavors that become more lively as the wine opens up. Shows impressive power without excess weight and finishes with slow-building tannins and impressive length. ~91-93 Vinous Media
