About the Wine

Domaine Barville is Laurent Brotte’s family estate, named after ancestors, the Barville. The 15ha vineyard is situated on the west side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and is composed of 7 parcels spread over two of the best areas of the appellation: Clay and pebbles at ‘Pradel’ and shattered limestone at ‘Beaurenard’. The vines average 35 years in age, at an elevation of around 100m. The local wind ‘The Mistral’, brings an exceptional healthy microclimate to the vineyard. A very warm climate and south-facing position are ideal for the perfect maturation and concentration of the berries.

BROTTE was founded in 1931 by Charles Brotte, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Ahead of his time, Charles Brotte was one of the first to bottle his wine and to engage in marketing a branded wine, rather than selling bulk wine. His son, Jean-Pierre Brotte pioneered the development of the export markets.

For the last 11 years, Christine Brotte, cellar master and Laurent Brotte’s wife, has been directing activities on the estates and in the cellar. She is assisted by two oenologists and a food products engineer. When she’s not taking care of her children, managing vineyards and the winery, she loves to cook traditional southern French cassoulet and ratatouille, both of which pair perfectly with her wines.

Aging: 33% New French Oak

Tasting Notes: 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre. The wine is highlighted with ruby with purple glints. Typical of its terroir, the nose is composed of spices, black pepper, lavender, black cherries, and blackberries. Elegant and powerful, with a distinctive velvety palate showing red fruits and spellbinding notes of garrigue. This cuvée is a pleasure to drink and will reward the most patient wine lover.

Reviews

The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine Barville is brilliant stuff, and probably the finest vintage of this wine to date. Based on 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre, with classic red and black fruits, garrigue, and spice, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, an opulent texture, and sweet tannin. Drink it over the coming 10-12 years. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

Rock-solid, with the ripe and racy profile of the vintage letting the raspberry and black cherry fruit sail through, laced with light anise, black tea, and mineral notes. A silky and refined display of depth. Drink now through 2030. 3,330 cases made, 1,400 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator

An easy-drinking crowd-pleaser, Barville's 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, aged in foudre, barrel and concrete. Garrigue notes accent cherry and raspberry fruit in this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine that's already approachable but doesn't lack for concentration. Drink it over the next 6-7 years. ~92 Robert Parker

Plump black-cherry and dried strawberry notes are accented by hints of cinnamon, leather, and toast in this full-bodied red. Bold in alcohol and richly concentrated, it's a warming, plush wine, but balanced by fresh red-currant acidity and soft, supple tannins. Drink now–2030. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
