Bruwer told me that the barrels are tasted blind and scored, and they are whittled down to the best until they have the best wine. It boasts a very impressive bouquet with superb delineation and focus: blackberry, bilberry, a light marine influence and a hint of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin on the entry that probably belies the structure of this wine. It is very harmonious, as usual, with a lovely sappiness towards the finish. Not as intense as other vintages that I have tasted, nevertheless it is one of the most refined, and perhaps the 2014 will require less bottle age than in previous seasons. In a word: class.

Readers should refer to my producer introduction for Raats Family Wines. Half of the wine was fermented and matured in 300-liter French oak barrels, half in stainless steel, for nine months before blending. The fragrant bouquet demands coaxing from the glass, revealing scents of yellow fruit, fennel and light granite. The palate is well balanced, offering orange zest, yellow fruit and touches of ginger and a very subtle, rich viscosity toward the finish, while maintaining superb freshness from beginning to end. Superb. ~92 pts Vinous Media

On first sniff, a soft wood note jumps from the glass, but once you look past that, you get to toasted apple slices, orange peel and Honeycomb cereal tones beneath, with hints of dried fynbos, sage and lemon wax at the back. He has journeyed from pioneering négociant beginnings in the early 1980’s, seeking out parcels of interesting vines to make exceptional wines under his own name, to a well-established family enterprise with a local and international reputation for exceptional elegance and quality. Today the journey of Neil Ellis Wines is not only about Neil Ellis. After 40 years of making wine, the next stage of the journey has begun with Neil’s son, Warren, sharing responsibilities as winemaker and viticulturist in the pursuit of quality winemaking. The 14ha of vines on the Klein Gustrouw farm were planted during an ongoing replanting program that started in 1990 introducing the latest soil preparation techniques and best plant material. The south facing slopes are significantly cooler than the surrounding area of Stellenbosch and a howling South Eastern wind during the summer months cools down the vineyards considerably, minimizing vine disease and holding down yields. The soils are mostly deep, decomposed granite soils. Its production was interrupted in the middle of the 19th century and was only resumed in the 1986 harvest, which was launched in 1990. Sweet white made exclusively from Muscat de Frontignan grapes. In 2019, due to weather conditions, ripening was slower than normal and extended the harvest period. 26 different harvests were carried out, seeking from the highest acidity to the level of raisin grapes. Each harvest was vinified separately and then blended during the last part of fermentation to balance sugar, alcohol and acidity. After that, the wine ages for around 18 months in 500-liter oak barrels, 50% of which are new, and then another 18 months in fourdres, until it is bottled.
