About the Wine

Luciano Sandrone is one of the most iconic producers in Barolo, and he is both a well-known and extraordinary story. Sandrone’s wines straddle the modern and traditional styles of the region: elegant, attractive, and easy to appreciate in their youth, but still possesses the power and structure of traditional Barolos. Sandrone focuses on extremely low yields with an obsessive attention to detail to his viticultural standards. Luciano subjects his wines to a shorter maceration period and makes limited use of new oak. The entire range of his limited production wines are jewels of impeccably balanced concentration and precision and have an impressive ability to age for decades. These rare treasures are hard to come by, don't let this be the one that got away.

The 2016 Le Vigne is crafted from four different vineyards, each with its own contribution. This union gives way to an exceptionally complex wine that is round and harmonious on the palate. This approach of vineyard blending is a timeless tradition in Barolo. The first vineyard, Vignane, is situated in the historical part of Barolo and shares many characteristics with Cannubi, the most famous hill in Italy. The Merli vineyard is located in Novello, with the Sandrone vines in a south-southwest facing bowl that perfectly captures the afternoon sunlight. The wines made from here are earthy and robust with great aromatic complexity. The third vineyard, Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, gives the wine added depth and richness. As of 2011, Le Vigne also includes fruit from Villero, a newly acquired vineyard in Castiglione Falletto.

The 2016 Le Vigne is brooding, coiled, and restrained, needing several years of patience to reach its peak. The nose slowly reveals dark cherries, licorice, underbrush, and distinct floral elements of violets and roses. On the palate, the tannins are dominant, sweet ad mouth-filling, and severe, needing time to come into balance with the prodigious fruit and acidity that lurks beneath the imposing structure. The finish seems to go on forever. Give this one time.

I found it to be unforgettable, quite literally, inspiring one of those celebrated "wow" moments that we wine lovers so desperately seek in bottle after bottle. Le Vigne is a clever blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba (offering the power), Villero in Castiglione Falletto (shaping the precision), Vignane in Barolo (adding to the purity of the aromas) and Merli in Novello (that helps to flesh out the fruit). This intersection of various vineyards spanning the appellation creates a pyramid of perfection and beauty. The nose is overflowing with fruit, with everything from strawberry compote to raspberry tea to chutney and boysenberry spread.
