It all started when Fritz Brander -born in Sweden- spent most of his working life in Europe between countries like France and England, decided to undertake a different journey, and venture to the southernmost country of the American continent, beautiful Argentina. Here is where his life changed!
After a year, he left the county. But, since he was completely in love with America, Fritz decided to return and start a business in the capital of tango, Buenos Aires. He started a very successful import and export business, and by 1926, he decided to expand it. That is how Brander & Co. was born.
The mix of traditions, cultures, and countries did not end here for the Brander family. Erik, Fritz’s son, a successful businessman followed in his father's footsteps and started running the family business, met Virginia on one of his trips to the US. The couple decided to move to Santa Barbara, California. This is where the magic of the wine business began for the Brander family.
In 1975 they began planting the first vines in this beautiful and prestigious wine region. Currently, Fred is the director of Brander Winery. Thanks to the mixture of languages and cultures where he was fortunate to grow up, Fred had the opportunity to study at different Universities in Argentina, Sweden, France and California. He is passionate about the knowledge and science of wine and food.
By 1977, the Brander winery was already building its proudly Swedish, Argentine and American winery. They have managed to position their Sauvignon Blanc among the best in all of California. As a fun fact, Fred is known by some people as the "King of Sauvignon Blanc" in California. And to quote the renowned wine critic, Matt Kettman: "Brander puts more effort into Sauvignon Blanc than anyone else in California."
Brander Winery is committed to sustainable practices in the vineyard and the winery, they do not use pesticides, herbicides, and the vineyard of more than 52 acres, has been following biodynamic practices for several years.
