About the Wine

Floral and beautiful. Full-bodied, layered, and juicy with loads of fruit and intensity” ~94 Points, James Suckling.

2018 Escudo Rojo 'Origine' Cabernet Sauvignon comes from one of the most beautiful places that exist on planet earth, right at the foot of the majestic Andes Mountain range; a one-of-a-kind valley that is known as Valle de Maipo, and that happens to be home to some of the best Chilean wine that the world has ever seen.

Escudo Rojo is owned by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild family; the same owners of Bordeaux’s First Growth, Château Mouton Rothschild; the world-famous winery in Napa Valley, Opus One; and the highly esteemed Chilean winery, Viña Almaviva, just to name a few.

This wine has been on the list of Top 100 Value wines numerous times, including on James Suckling’s list in 2021.

In 1990, this renowned family decided to start producing wine in Chile, and let me assure you that when one of the most famous wine families sets their eye in one region, success is guaranteed.

Chile is a paradise on earth thanks to its location and weather conditions, this place is without a doubt the perfect place for the vines to thrive. This country is completely protected by natural barriers, to the east with the Andes Mountains, to the west with the Pacific Ocean, to the north with the Atacama Desert, and to the south with Patagonia; this allows a wide diversity of terroirs, all of them achieving impressive quality wines. Escudo Rojo’s vineyard is composed of more than 14,000 acres and it is managed in a sustainable way.

“Escudo Rojo” means red shield, this is the Spanish translation of the German “Rote Schild”. This translation is meant to express the perfect blend that the family’s tradition had with the Chilean culture. Just a sip of this wine will take you straight to the beautiful Valle de Maipo!

Aging: 12 months in 25% new oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Elegant and refined aromas of red fruits like strawberry, cherry, and blackcurrant and a subtle note of vanilla. Smooth and balanced acidity, with fine and polished tannins. Pair this wine with chicken Magret, or grilled meat.

Reviews

This is very decadent on the nose with blackberries and undertones of black licorice and raw meat. Floral and beautiful. Full-bodied, layered, and juicy with loads of fruit and intensity. Long, long finish. Needs two or three years to soften. Better after 2022. ~94 James Suckling

~94 Descorchados

A Cabernet Sauvignon from Buin, Maipo, that combines harvest sectors and dates as part of a modern approach. Intense garnet in color, with a nose that offers up notes of fresh black currant and vanilla from the wood, combined with black and bell pepper. Juicy, with polished, active tannins, well-judged freshness, and a lingering, bold palate. ~92 Vinous Media
