About the Wine

Church Block McLaren Vale is an iconic wine from Wirra Wirra, it was the winery's first wine to be released to the public back in 1972. If you are looking for a classic and luscious Aussie wine, at an affordable price, this is for you!

The history of Wirra Wirra Winery dates back to 1894 when a former cricketer decided to build this winery in the distant and exotic McLaren Vale. However, his glory days began with the arrival of Greg Trott, when in 1960 he decided to buy it and rebuild it.

Greg Trott was a man who defied all standards; He had a visionary mind and was always focused on the quality of his wines, however, all his work was strongly linked to enjoying and having fun in the process, this became Wirra Wirra’s mantra: “You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun. "Greg Trott.

The mastermind responsible for producing these fun and vibrant wines is Paul Smith, a passionate winemaker whose philosophy is to “let the fruit shine.” Paul seeks to produce wines that are alive, bright, and that express the beautiful terroir of the land.

The winery is quite a show and completely worth visiting. In 2021, they were awarded the global winner of “Best of Wine Tourism” by The Great Wine Capitals in the World.

This winery is charming, with beautiful architecture that has an antique feel and will immediately transport you to a movie from medieval times. However, things are different in the vineyard and vinification cellar, the winery is modern and has state-of-the-art technology.

Wirra Wirra has an enormous focus on its vines, stating that "Great Wines Come from Healthy Vines." The vineyard has been managed in a biodynamic and sustainable way for more than 10 years, and they have been certified organically with NASAA since 2013. In addition to these favorable practices towards the vineyard, this winery is also environmentally and socially responsible.

2017 was a good year in McLaren Vale, it was awarded 92 Points by Wine Spectator: “A cool, wet vintage, with soft, aromatic and elegant wines and generous yields”

Tasting Notes: 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Shiraz, and 12% Merlot. Aromas of red and black currants, plums, as well as leaf and briary notes. Gentle oak influence includes cedar, toast, and cocoa. There is a depth of plush fruit richness expressed as cassis, red berries, and plums, balanced by savory, cedary, and dark chocolate characters. Fine tannins provide a framework that brings a fresh, chewy satisfaction. Pair this wine with lamb and roasted dishes.

Reviews

Purity with black concentrated fruit and bold tannins, generous fruit ample in the mouth, long and lasting. ~92 International Wine Challenge.

A strong edition of this blended red (cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and merlot) that offers blackcurrants and red to dark plums with spicy oak and gently leafy tones. The palate is all about fleshy fruit that you can sink into easily now. So drinkable and flavorful. Drink now. Screw cap. ~91 James Suckling
