About the Wine

Domaine Huet is an out-of-this-world winery. This is the most important Chenin Blanc producer in the world. This estate has won the heart of some of the major wine critics in the universe, who just can’t stop talking about it. Wine Spectator said, “Domaine Huet is a benchmark Chenin Blanc producer in Vouvray, an appellation in the Touraine district.” Decanter stated that it is “revered for its age-worthy Chenin Blancs,” and Vinous Media declared that Domaine Huet is, perhaps, Vouvray's most famous name. No matter the site or the sweetness level, there is an ethereal and elegant quality to these wines that defy scientific analysis.”

Domaine Huet was founded more than a century ago, by Victor Huet and his son Gaston.  Today, this world-class Domaine is composed of 74 acres located in some of the most outstanding terroirs in the Loire Valley: Haut-Lieu, Mont, and Clos du Bourg.

This family-owned winery was one of the first ones in the region to convert its vineyards into fully biodynamic farmingnand got its certification in 1993. This has allowed them to “develop the character of the wines and preserve the authenticity of the terroirs.”

These Chenin experts are the measuring stick for all other producers in the region. 2020 was the first vintage to be released under winemaker Benjamin Joliveau’s guidance. Benjamin, born and raised in Vouvray, acquire his expertise working hand-in-hand with legendary winemakers Noël Pinguet and Jean-Bernard Berthomé.

Chenin Blanc wines are known for their natural acidity, captivating aromas, and aging capacity. Benjamin has created these stunning wine gems that not only accomplish the criteria above but surpass them.

This amazing Chenin Blanc comes from Clos de Bourg. This vineyard, composed of only 14 acres, is considered to be Vouvray’s finest single vineyard. Clos de Bourg is one of the oldest vineyards in Vouvrillon. It's situated in blessed soils composed of clay and limestone and rests on a tuff subsoil. This results in profound wines, with outstanding elegance.

Tasting Notes: 100% Chenin Blanc. The Clos du Bourg Vouvray Demi-Sec shows a beautiful and elegant nose, dominated by orchard fruits, acacia, and toast. The textural palate is full and intense with flavors of rhubarb compote, red fruits, and exotic spices. Rounded, mineral, and exquisite complexity show effortless power. This is a meditation wine that will age gracefully.

Reviews

The 2021 Clos du Bourg Sec is an ample, full bodied wine with a stream of acidity. Pure, floral and fragrant with aromas of pineapple, violets and fresh grapes. While rich, it is light in sensation, like a cloud of Chenin filling the mouth and finishes with a fine, almost powdery and chalky texture.

Domaine Huet, perhaps Vouvray's most famous name, was founded almost a century ago. An early adopter of biodynamics, it was certified in 1993 when even organic producers were considered to be hippies. Today, Domaine Huet is run by Sarah Hwang, whose family bought the estate in 2003. Production of wine styles (from dry to sweet) varies depending on the season, and the seasons are becoming more erratic every year. In 2018, around 85% of production was sweet, and they were able to make the rare, sweet cuvée, Constance. The original vineyard, Le Haut Lieu is a clay-based vineyard which was first purchased in 1928 by founder Gaston Huet. It now covers 15 hectares and remains the most fruit-forward of the estate’s sites. The addition of Clos du Bourg came in 1953. It’s a real clos, surrounded by walls and is a little warmer than the other sites making it the first of the Huet vineyards to be picked. Conversely, the Le Mont vineyard, which was acquired in 1957, has a greenish yellow clay soil with flint scattered throughout, making it a cooler site; it is picked the latest and takes time to express itself fully in the glass. No matter the site or the sweetness level, there is an ethereal and elegant quality to these wines that defies scientific analysis. ~95 Vinous Media

The 2019 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec offers a deep, rich yet pure and refined, intensely aromatic, darker-toned nose with aromas of fully ripe stone and tropical fruit intertwined with earthy, chalky and yeasty notes that make up for further finesse and complexity. Full-bodied, round and fruity on the palate, this is a deep, intense, juicy, silky-textured yet tight, chalky, very complex, sustainably structured and persistently salty-mineral Chenin from old vines that give extra concentration as well as a spectacularly expressive character. This is a great, age-worthy Vouvray with fine tannins and lingering salty tension and finesse. What a finish! The 2019 needs a while to gain finesse and even more complexity. The wine served from the bottle that I tasted nine days before was incredibly amazing! The 2019 is a duty for all Chenin aficionados! 13.5% alcohol. 30,000 bottles made. Tasted in July 2020. ~97 Wine Advocate (v.2019)
