One of the original estates of Montalcino and now the largest certified organic estate in Tuscany, Col d’Orcia is a leader in Brunello di Montalcino. The estate is known for helping to define and promote one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. The estate’s name translates to “the hill overlooking the Orcia River,” as its position lies in the undulating hills between the Orcia River and Sant’Angelo in Colle. Here, the southern orientation provides vines with abundant exposure to sunshine. The vineyard soils are comprised of limestone and marl which facilitates natural irrigation. Located at about 1500 feet above sea level, the estate is favorably positioned against Mount Amiata (5,700 feet) which helps shield the property from floods and hail. The climate is typically the Mediterranean, with limited rainfall coming in from the Tyrrhenian coast, 21 miles away.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah. Intense ruby red, with brilliant violet hues. The nose is ample and intense with delicate scents of currant, blackberry jam, and tomato leaf complemented by hints of toasted aromas from the oak. Excellent structure, ripe and persistent tannins. The classical toasted notes coming from the barrels lead to a sweet and balanced aftertaste.

A well-delineated red, exhibiting pure black currant, blackberry, violet and iron aromas and flavors. Sleek and fused to a foundation of dusty tannins, this finds nice equilibrium in the end, showing fine potential for aging. Merlot, Petit Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Rich ruby red with purple edges. On the nose, ripe wild berries and Amarena cherry, hints of vanilla and candle wax. On the palate, velvety tannins, soft and precise, notes of blood orange and dark berries. The wine is vibrant, an elegant expression, with great flow despite having a powerful body. ~93 Falstaff

The nose is deeply umami, with seaweed, balsamic and black olives, nuanced with aromas of candied cherry and just-picked blackberries. The palate offers more sweet ripe fruit, and more savory tang from olives, salt and pepper for a substantial, textured mouthfeel. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
