About the Wine

For those in the know, Meyer Family Cellars are much more than the original founders of the well-known Silver Oak. They are one of the leading artisanal wineries in California, turning heads with their luscious wines from the up and coming, Yorkville HighlandsSecond generation winemaking duo Matt and Karen Meyer continue to build upon their family's legacy, imparting the wisdom passed down from legendary Justin and Bonny Meyer. Their wines incorporate “old world” balance, acidity, and minerality with “new world” ripeness and persistent fruit. Their wines are exciting, guaranteed to please, and unforgettable!

Known as the gateway to Anderson Valley, the Yorkville Highlands is a picturesque region who's porous soil and cool climate generate perfect conditions for viticulture.

The final drought influenced growing season is arguably the best vintage of the Millennia. No frost in the spring and a moderate summer provided a perfect environment for the grapes. 2016 is marked by low yields as the grapes struggled to find water, but with pressure comes diamonds. The low yields help the vines producer higher quality fruit with greater concentration. The wine is robust and complex filling the palate with ripe fruit and balanced by 50% new oak. Don't miss out on this Northern California gem!

Aging: 22 months in 50% new American Oak

Tasting notes: Lively, red-black fruit aromas immediately jump out of the glass, followed by juicy, palate-coating fruit and firm tannins that are the hallmarks of this phenomenal vintage. Blackberry, currant, and cassis make up the complex mid-palate, deepened by notes of licorice and eucalyptus. Two years’ aging in American oak add balancing touches of cedar and spice, along with some additional tannin that will help this delicious Cabernet Sauvignon age well for a decade or more—though it’s also built to enjoy with a steak tonight!

Reviews

“In 2006, he (Matt) crushed his first wine grown entirely in the Yorkville Highlands appellation, where his winery, Meyer Family Cellars, is located. He kicked off 2007 by celebrating his 30th birthday and releasing an impressive Mendocino County Syrah, the first wine he made entirely from budbreak to bottling....At one time, everyone who cared about American wine knew Justin Meyer's name, because he co-founded the iconic Silver Oak winery in Napa Valley in 1972. He was also a larger-than-life personality who helped create the Napa Valley we know today, and thereby influenced the course of California wine." Learn more ~San Francisco Chronicle.
