About The Wine

Produced by California royalty Daou Vineyards, Patrimony is a top-of-the-line Cabernet built for the cellar. Absolutely no corners were cut when producing this wine, it is made using old-world techniques like natural fermentation, and new-world technology like optical sorting for selecting only the best fruit. Patrimony is a must-have wine for any serious California Wine collector. Indeed, Jeb Dunnuck says this wine is the, "real deal and consistently ranks with the finest Bordeaux varieties coming out of California today."

Hailing from Lebanon by way of Paris, France, Georges, and Daniel Daou moved to the United States as young men and soon achieved business success. But that was just the beginning. From their family history and worldview was now imagined a fearless goal—to produce the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon, and to curate a lifestyle to match. From terroir to winemaking to architecture, they leave no detail unexplored, so that this wine, and this place, may never fail to astonish.

Patrimony is rooted in the unrivaled terroir of Daou Mountain. The phenolics produced on this mountain are known to be among the highest in the world, fostering an immensity of color, depth, and structure. In order to extract the purest and most elevated expression of this terroir, a purposeful omission is required. For this reason, only select vineyard rows are chosen for Patrimony cultivation. By the time the fruit is aggressively thinned, optically sorted, and used only for its free-run juice, a minimal percentage of the total potential yield actually meets the exacting standard we set for Patrimony. Fermentation proceeds exclusively with wild yeasts cultured from Daou Mountain, imbuing the wine with native texture and character.

Aging: 30 Months in 100% new, low toast New French Oak Barrels selected from exclusively old-growth trees. 100% free run juice.

Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an uber-concentrated wine that offers explosive aromas of lilac, hibiscus, thyme, and dark chocolate. Intense qualities of ripe blackberries, black currant, and blueberries accompany a beautiful harmony of flavors that begin with an impressive entry and linger for several minutes. Full-bodied and silky in texture, this wine displays immense elegance backed by a wonderful minerality, all while remaining fresh and vibrant. This wine will reward careful cellaring and bottle aging for decades to come.

Reviews

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon continues to show brilliantly. (I rated it 97-100 from barrel last year.) It has a quintessential Cabernet nose of pure crème de cassis, crushed stone, lead pencil, graphite, and tobacco that gains depth and richness with time in the glass. Deep, full-bodied, rich, and incredibly textured, yet still fresh, light on its feet, and beautifully balanced, this gorgeous Cabernet shows what's possible with the variety from Paso Robles.

What can be thought of as the flagship label from the Daou brothers, Patrimony includes four releases – varietal releases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, and their Caves des Lions, which is a blend from a vineyard around the home of one of the brothers. These are the real deal and consistently rank with the finest Bordeaux varieties coming out of California today. ~97-99 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Patrimony is fresh and minerally at this stage. Still in barrel, it's made entirely of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon and will be aged for 30 months in 100% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, it's scented of blueberry liqueur, thyme, mint chocolate and dried herbs with savory wafts of soy sauce. The full-bodied palate is grainy and fresh, with a long, spicy finish. It has the detail and balance to allow it to pick up complexity as it continues along its evolution toward bottling. ~95-97 Wine Advocate

Deep, rich and plush on the nose showing cassis, blackberries with hints of dark olives, fennel, dark chocolate, cigar box and elderberry characters. Full-bodied and fleshy on the palate with an abundance of tannins, which are extremely fine-grained. Restrainedly opulent, deep, structured and long. ~95 James Suckling.
