Like his other 2015s, there is a nascent Burgundy-like allure on the nose that is beguiling in purity and beautifully defined, with scents of small dark cherries, Indian ink and a touch of cassis, an undertow of minerals that will surely become more perceptible as the wine ages in bottle. The palate is harmonious and animated. You are immediately taken by the fineness of the tannin and its velvety smooth texture. It just glides effortlessly along, extremely persistent and tensile on the finish. This will be irresistible once in bottle, and yet there is the substance to see it age for many years. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, espresso, chocolate, spice and licorice infuse this voluptuous, racy Saint-Émilion. Dense, powerful and explosive, it just gets better and better with time in the glass. Super-ripe cherry and plum fruit are laced with scents of tobacco, licorice, incense and white truffle that add nuance. What a gorgeous wine this is! Proprietor François Mitjavile isn't afraid to be a contrarian. While many estates opt for shorter aging, Mitjavile gives his wine two full years in 100% new oak and also keeps the cellar on the warm side during the winter months. It fermented separately for 11 days, the Tempranillo in stainless steel and the rest in oak vats. It matured in new French oak barrels for 19 months. They had to do a very strict selection and discarded some 50% of the grapes. It has a very Atlantic, cool-climate profile, with the Cabernet Sauvignon marking the nose quite a bit, somehow austere (perhaps the increase of Graciano has something to do with it). It's balsamic, herbal, clean, serious and complex. The palate is very balanced, with refined, fine-grained tannins and a nice core of acidity. This is a very good, serious vintage of Dalmau. Proprietor Vicente Cebrián told me they are thinking about keeping the Dalmau in bottle for some three years before it's released. 20,814 bottles were filled in October 2016. ~94WA

***Free Shipping on 12 or more bottles of this wine***

2015 Dom. The palate is very well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, tensile and energetic with real precision and detail on the mineral-driven finish. This is a wonderful, sophisticated Chablis that lingers in the mouth a couple of minutes after the wine has departed. Superb.

Domaine Christian Moreau has been one of the most reliable sources of Chablis in recent years. Christian Moreau himself, always brutally candid with an impeccably wry, almost sardonic sense of humor and of course decades of experience, escorted me through the 2016 barrel samples and 2015s in bottle, plus a smattering of older vintages (see "Up From the Cellar"). To be frank, these mature bottles were interesting to taste, however, they testify to the tangible improvement under Fabien Moreau. I asked Christian why that might be the case and what factors have led to this upswing. He answered that they have paid far more attention to the vineyards in recent years, resulting in higher quality fruit. In the last four or five vintages, the wines have displayed far more precision and terroir expression and perhaps superior aging potential. With respect to the 2016 vintage, I asked about the challenges they faced. “In 2016, first we had the frost that especially affected the top of the hill," Christian explained, "though the grand crus were less damaged. Then there were the two hailstorms in May. The first hit Préhy and the second hit the vicinity of Fourchaume and the northern vineyards towards Maligny. At least the hail was early in 2016, before the flowering. In 2015 it struck one week before the harvest. We could hear it falling from around midnight. So this really hit production. For example, Les Clos was down by 20%. Then we had the frost this year in 2017 that has destroyed nearly 100 hectares. Valmur will be down by 70% but the right bank is not too bad. In 2017, even if the buds were not frozen, we found that the bunches did not form normally. The frost lasted seven nights and we only had candles for one more night. We were lucky—some people did not have any at all. The thing is that in 2017 we had frost in areas where we have never had it before.” All these meteorological disasters, or to put it more accurately, “challenges,” resulted in markedly different picking dates for the 2015 and 2016 vintages. The 2015s were picked directly after the late hailstorm on 3 September, in order to minimize damage, whereas the 2016 commenced on 26 September. Despite everything, I was deeply impressed by the quality of the 2016s, which came across as precise, poised, mineral driven and packed full of intense fruit. You would scarcely believe that on the eve of harvest the vintage had been on the precipice of disaster, testament to the efforts to get into the vineyard immediately. Their unique cuvée from Les Clos, bought from the Hospices in 1904, is outstanding and kudos must also go to Vaillons, one of their strongest cuvées. ~94WA

Dom. We have to be more careful than in the past. It was not a very early vintage, but we had to be careful with the Merlot and not to harvest too late. It was very important to keep the fruit and the energy in the wines. In the end, we didn’t even need to fine the wines—this was only the second vintage for this. We started in 2015. In 2017 we will probably not need to fine either. We have our own bottling line, so we have control.” Arangoits and his team nailed it in 2016. It is also important to highlight that the transformation at Cos d’Estournel since Michel Reybier purchased the château in 2000 is simply incredible. Reybier’s considerable efforts since then in the vineyards and the winery are remarkable. What he has achieved has not only helped to bring the estate up to its true potential but also instilled a pretty impressive batting record when it comes to consistency of quality. This wine was released at the beginning of this year, and because Dal Forno skipped over the 2014 vintage, this is the only Amarone we will see for a while (until the highly anticipated 2015 is released). The 2013 vintage is characterized by a slightly more streamlined mouthfeel (which isn't saying much given the baseline enormity of these wines) with carefully etched aromas of black cherry, rum cake, dark chocolate and toasted espresso. The 2013 vintage was balanced overall without the sudden heat waves we saw in the summers of 2011 and 2012. The grapes finished a slow and steady ripening process over an extended growing season. Consider that the dry extract is a massive 48 grams per liter. In fact, there is some minor precipitation of color matter even at this relatively young age. This wine was aged in new oak for two years (instead of the standard three years) with four years bottle (instead of three). That extra year in glass served to help the wine integrate and to reduce micro-oxygenation. The bouquet is bright and fragrant with floral notes of rose and violet that are rare to find in Valpolicella. There are faint tertiary notes as well that add to the complexity. You will find cured leather and savory spice. The past decade has seen the refurbishing of the new winery and more construction to the monumental estate that sits just beyond tall gates in Cellore d'Illasi, Valpolicella. Romano Dal Forno is at work on his succession plan and the generational shift is clearly underway with more winemaking and marketing responsibilities now passed off to his sons. In addition to the wines reviewed here, I had the opportunity to preview taste the 2012 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta and the 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta. These are promising wines that will be scored towards the end of the year when they are ready for review. It offers monumental depth with profound layers of black fruit, coffee, licorice and baking chocolate. I tasted this 2016 vintage beside the less-impactful 2015 vintage (which was reviewed last year). These two editions are very different when compared side to side, and this 2016 release is clearly superior in terms of the quality, clarity and intensity of its offerings. This Ornellaia delivers glossy shine and a polished texture that segues to important richness, concentration and textural fiber. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting waves of sweet dark fruit and dark spice that linger for many long minutes. Naturally, the 2016 is just at the beginning of its life, but I am struck by how polished the tannins are for such a young wine. Ornellaia is at its best starting around age ten, but there is little doubt the 2016 is a hugely promising wine.
