About the Wine

If you are a Sauvignon Blanc lover, this wine is the perfect option for you! Friuli is at the top of the game when referring to fresh Italian Sauvignon Blancs. It's the perfect wine to have while sunbathing at the pool this summer!

Situated in Italy's Northeastern white wine mecca, Friuli, Meroi devotes a majority of its vineyards to native white wine varieties along with a touch of Merlot and Refosco. For those that may be unfamiliar, Friuli is not only Italy's critically acclaimed white wine polestar but one of the world's finest wine-producing regions. Meroi's world-renowned white wines are not only some of Friuli's best but also some of Italy's brightest stars.

Meriori is located in Buttrio, a beautiful wine region in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It was founded in 1920 and has been owned by a single family ever since. The founder, Domenico Meroi, also owned a restaurant or “trattoria” that is still in operation today. The story becomes even more interesting when we discover that the wines from the trattoria (produced by their own estate) were protected and hidden from the German soldiers of the Second World War, who occupied both of their properties and forced Dominico to provide them with all types of food. Domenico knew what a great product he had and did not hesitate to hide the best of his wines behind a false wall!

Colli Orientali del Friuli is possibly the most recognized “Denominazione di Origine Controllata” in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and home to some of the most prestigious wines in the area. Both, white and red varieties grow happy here thanks to the great climate that this region has, combined with soils composed of arsenic and marl, known as: “Cormòns flysch”, resulting in a terroir that produces elegant and velvety wines.

Not everything is about wine in Colli Orientali del Friuli, it is also a region with great culture, art, history, and natural landscapes. It is a region loved by tourists from all over the world, where they can enter the medieval times when visiting castle ruins and religious monuments, touring the spectacular mountains that border Austria, and immersing in the wine culture by visiting the beautiful vineyards that occupy almost 5,000 acres of extension, known as “Vine and Wine Park”. This region becomes a complete paradise for travelers!

Paolo, Domenico Meroi's great-grandson and current owner, has achieved positive growth in this estate, from the vineyard to the winery. Meroi has almost 50 acres of vineyard in production, where the vines are grown and treated organically, without using pesticides or herbicides.

2018 Meroi Sauvignon Colli Orientali del Friuli is a small production of 100% Sauvignon Blanc, from vines over 30 years old, the wine ages for approximately 10 months in oak barrels, 50% new.

Aging: 11 months in 50% new oak (barrique)

Tasting Notes: The color is an intense straw yellow. The nose is elegant and refined, with gently intertwined fruity notes of flowering plants, quince, with aromatic herbs and spices such as mint, rosemary, anise, pink peppercorn, and floral hints of oleander and almond. The palate is lively, pleasantly savory; lime, bergamot; gentle finish of crème caramel and chopped hazelnuts.

Reviews

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is pleasantly sweet on the nose, wafting up notes of yellow flowers, ripe apple, pear and hints of vanilla bean. Its textures are silky, nearly oily in feel, coasting over a balancing core of brisk acidity, displaying ripe orchard fruits with hints of confectioners’ spice and hazelnut. The finish is more structured than expected, yet not severe, tapering off with notes of sweet cream, peach, ginger cookie and brioche. It’s a big wine, one that struts its oak influence with pride. ~Vinous Media
