About the Wine

"Easy-going, not too tannic, juicy, fresh, and precise." ~Decanter

Château de Beaucastel is recognized among some of the greatest wine estates in France. This estate has been producing award-winning, impeccable, and elegant CDPs since its early beginnings.

Located right in the heart of the Rhone Valley, this worldwide recognized winery dates to the 16th century, when in 1549, Pierre de Beaucastel acquired the land. Today, this winery is led by the 5th generation of the Perrin family, Jean-Pierre, François, and their sons. Since its inception, Beaucastel’s mantra remains: “Absolute respect for land and terroir, biodynamic culture as a philosophy of life, the research of truth, balance and elegance.”

This winery comprises more than 300 acres of which 240 are plated with the 13 grapes to produce the emblematic CDP blend. All these vines, of average 50-year-old age, are planted in an extremely blessed terroir, with rolled pebbles on the surface, and sand, clay, and limestone deeper down. The vineyard has been managed with sustainable and organic practices since its beginnings, and in 1974 the estate was converted into a fully biodynamic. Decanter Magazine said, “The Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainable viticulture.”

Coudoulet is a 70-acre vineyard located in Côtes-du-Rhône. This beautiful vineyard, which is considered the “baby Beaucastel," produces younger, fresher, and more approachable CDP-Style wines. If you love CDP, but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, this wine will be your new favorite!

This wine is born in what appears to be an amazing vintage. Decanter said, the best terroirs really shined, producing athletic, elegant wines of intensity and panache.”

Aging: Oak foudres for 6 months.

Tasting Notes: 40% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault. The nose reveals a beautiful freshness and a seductive aromatic bouquet combining notes of red fruit, spices, and white pepper with a hint of perfectly integrated toasted vanilla. Full-bodied, greedy, and very soft, the palate presents a very nice balance with the freshness and aromas of black cherry jam. The finish is long with a beautiful aromatic intensity and velvety tannins. A wine of great elegance with good aging potential.

Reviews

Deep, savory nose with notes of ripe black cherries and plum cake, plus minty and floral notes. In spite of the considerable power and generous tannin, this is very focused and elegant. The long, energetic finish suggests this has years of life ahead of it. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling.

Easy-going, not too tannic, juicy, fresh, and precise, with raspberry acidity. Good length, more structured than many Côtes-du-Rhônes. Tannins just a touch dry and fibrous compared to some finer Châteauneufs, but this is very good. ~92 Decanter.

The 2020 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel continues this cuvée's hot streak. A blend of approximately 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, with 10% Carignan, it boasts attractive floral overtones, hints of crushed stone, and ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied and impressively silky for such a young wine, it should be drinkable upon release and for at least a decade thereafter. ~90-92 Robert Parker.

Bottled a month ago, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet sports a vivid ruby hue and is a blend of 30% each of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, with the balance of Cinsault. It’s a ripe, rounded, medium to the full-bodied effort that has lots of ripe red and blue fruits as well as notes of peppery garrigue and leather. Drink this juicy, elegant Côtes Du Rhône over the coming decade. ~91 Jeb Dunnuck.
