About the Wine

It's believed to take at least 10,000 hours to obtain expertise in any given field or skill. The Ciacci family has been displaying mastery in Brunello production for 53 years. As part of the original twelve Brunello bottlers, Tenuta di Sesta has elevated the standard of Brunello di Montalcino since its inception. It is safe to these guys are experts.

Since 1966, the same year Brunello became recognized as a DOC, the Ciacci family has been cultivating high-quality Brunello. Their vines are grown upon limestone and red clay soils in the south of Montalcino. The family utilizes traditional winemaking and aging techniques focused on obtaining the best expression of Montalcino.

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Ruby red trending towards garnet. The wine is intense with a broad bouquet, elegant, rich with red fruits, spiced licorice, and tobacco. The wine is comforting, soft with velvet tannins, balanced and intense, crescendoed with an elegant finish. Pair alongside red meats, game, mature cheeses.

2015 Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."

2016 Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market."

Reviews

2015 Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is firmly rooted in the earth, as black cherry and tea leaves give way to moist soil tones, smoky minerals, and a hint of animal musk. On the palate, fleshy textures usher in polished, ripe black fruits and offsetting savory herbs, with minerals and round tannins slowly saturating the senses. The finish is long and zesty, with citrus-infused tannins and minerals tugging at the cheeks, as dried red fruits and undeniably pretty floral tones slowly fade. This is wonderfully balanced and geared up for mid-term evolution in the cellar. Frankly, I think of it like a swiss army knife of Brunello, pleasing at first pour, but with the stuffing to go ten to fifteen years. Well done. -94 Vinous Media

Quite understated for a 2015 Brunello, this shows heather, rose petals, and tulips. Hints of bark, red licorice, and cedar. Medium-to full-bodied with silky, sleek tannins and lots of mouthwatering acidity drive. Refined and elegant. Drink from 2021. ~94 James Suckling

2016 Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino

A tight, refined red with plum, berry, cherry, and some cedar and lemon peel. It’s medium-to-full-bodied with fine, tight tannins and a fresh finish. Pretty, ripe fruit at the end. Drinkable now, but better in 2022. ~94 James Suckling

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Tenuta di Sesta lifts up with a zesty display of tart cherries, incense, spiced orange peels, and dusty dried earth tones. It’s silky and soft, complemented by juicy acids and sweet red fruits, taking on notes of licorice, dark chocolate, and purple inner florals. This is such a pleasure to taste, as it blends ripeness with nervous tension and grippy tannins to create a truly satisfying yet also youthful and balanced expression. The 2016 Tenuta di Sesta should only require a few years to come into focus, and it will provide a long and open drinking window from there on out. ~93 Vinous Media
