In 2003 Robert Parker called the Shafer Estate, "one of the world’s greatest wineries." The Shafer family is no stranger to the spotlight, receiving critical praise from wine critics abound. The family has produced Wine Spectators "Wine of the Year" along with being recognized by the James Beard Foundation as "Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year." Through all their success and accolades the Shafer Vineyards has remained one of Napa's premier Family owned and operated Estates. There's no better time than now to discover the magic of family-produced Cabernet from one of Napa's best.
One Point Five takes its name from the term “a generation and a half,” coined by John and Doug Shafer to describe their long father-and-son
partnership. Since 1983 this family team has worked together to manage their Stags Leap District winery. A portion of this wine is from the Shafer estate 'Hillside' vineyard and a portion is from the nearby 'Borderline' vineyard.
It's important to recognize that Shafer is still a family operation and very much hands-on. The total production at Shafer is significantly less than many of the large, well-known commercial brands. You can taste the difference.
Shafer Vineyards is a 30,000 case winery in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District managed by the father and son team of John and Doug Shafer. The Shafer family owns and farms 200 acres of vineyards, sources for Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, and Petite Sirah.
Aging: 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels
98% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Malbec. 2018 One Point Five is aromatically bright and overflowing with elegant, energetic flavors of red summer berries, black cherry, rose petal, and red and black plum, along with mocha, cinnamon, and spices. The seamless, silky tannins create a lush mouthfeel now and hold the promise for more riches to come with careful cellaring.
This is a muscular wine with a velvety backdrop—classic for the vintage and appellation. Silky tannins glide across a foundation of turned earth, crushed rock, clove, and tobacco. The wine is hugely structured and grand. Dark plum, cherry, and mocha flavors round out the profile. Cellar Selection. ~97 Wine Enthusiast
This has a deliciously ripe and perfumed nose of blueberries, cloves, potpourri, and gravel. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and fresh acidity. Creamy and elegant with a driven, focused finish. Cooler and more refined at the end. Try from 2023. ~95 James Suckling
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is brilliant, and up with the crème de la crème at the price point. Lots of cassis, graphite, unsmoked tobacco, new leather, and cedar notes all give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, beautifully balanced 2018. As with all these 2018s, it shows the pure, elegant style of the vintage and is going to age gracefully. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck
Composed of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five charges out of the gate with notes of crème de cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, and blackberry pie plus suggestions of bay leaves, fertile loam, and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the mouth is completely coated with juicy black fruit flavors, supported by plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with an invigorating herbal lift. ~93 Robert Parker
Shafer's Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is bright and punchy in 2018, with striking floral accents that give lift. In most vintages, the One Point Five is a bit more exuberant, but what impresses me about the 2018 is its finesse. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red/purplish berry fruit as the wine fleshes out over time. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well right out of the gate. ~93 Antonio Galloni
