About the Wine

In the south-west of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, just a stone’s throw from Château Cos d’Estournel and Château Lafite-Rothschild, the elegant chartreuse residence at Lilian Ladouys will catch your eye on the vine-covered horizon. In 2008, the Lorenzetti family instantly fell in love with this history-seeped sleeping beauty of a house. The vineyards and cellars have since been fully restructured and Lilian Ladouys is now ready to step back into the spotlight. On 20th February 2020, the verdict was handed down: Château Lilian Ladouys had been classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel!

Since the Lorenzetti family took over in 2008, the Domaine has undergone extensive restructuring works in its vineyards. They made the decision to bring the focus back to its finest, primarily gravel terroirs with the objective of taking quality to new levels. The Domaine has become much stricter during the selection process for the first and second wines. In 2020 the Chateau made the commitment to convert their vineyards to 100% organic agriculture by 2023. The Lorenzetti family is taking this Domaine to new heights and it's only a matter of time before they're firmly placed within the upper echelon of Bordeaux Chateau!

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot make up the majority of the blend, with the proportions varying from one year to the next. They are supplemented by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s wines go into gravity-fed vats and undergo vinification with a partially gravity-based system, which is more sensitive to the integrity and subtleties of the grapes and the wine.

Aging: 14 months in 40-60% New French Oak

Tasting notes: Red Wine. Cabernet Sauvignon 45% Merlot 50% Petit Verdot 4% Cabernet Franc 1%. The wine has a rich and crisp structure with ripe tannins, refined oak which melts into an explosion of fruit. It has the opulence and length of a Saint-Estèphe fine wine. Thanks to the appellation’s limestone-clay subsoils, its power is balanced out by a wonderful sensation of freshness.

Reviews

Love the black-truffle and dark-berry aromas here that follow through to a firm, full-bodied palate with polished and chewy tannins. Juicy and real. Better in two or three years, but already very pretty. ~93 James Suckling

Under the ownership of Jacky Lorenzetti, president of one of France's top rugby clubs, this estate is now performing impressively. The wine is finely structured with dark tannins and tight acidity and a hint of minerality. It is Merlot dominated, although it is the 40% Cabernet Sauvignon that brings out the black-currant fruitiness. Drink from 2022. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

The 2014 Lilian Ladouys 2014 has a crisp, masculine, tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, briary, and cedar emerging with aeration. There is clearly prudent use of oak here, complementing rather than dominating the wine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a pleasant sous-Bois note underpinning the layers of cedary black fruit, and a touch of spiciness on the finish. This comes highly recommended plus great value. ~90 Robert Parker

Juicy, with good briary energy to the core of crushed plum and black currant fruit. Bay and tobacco notes fill in on the finish, adding range, though the fruit holds the upper hand easily. ~90 Wine Spectator
