About the Wine

The Pio Cesare winery was founded in 1881, by Cesare Pio and has been producing high-quality Barolo for 135 years! Cesare was a very successful entrepreneur and was inspired to produce a small and select quantity of wines from the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco for himself, his family, friends, and customers. Since 1985 Pio Cesare has been producing single-vineyard Barolo from the Ornato. This location was special enough for the estate to deem it worthy of its first single-vineyard designation.

Over the years, Pio Cesare has gained fame and prominence both domestically and internationally, becoming one of the most respected names among Italian wine producers, with a special focus on its renowned Barolo. Pio Cesare produces classic Barolo at a very high level. That expertise is apparent in the wine’s structure, harmony, gentle tannins, and balanced fruit. It is immediately approachable, but with very long aging potential.

"The full capability of the nebbiolo grape’s expressive nature is alive in Barolo 2015 and it is a vintage to really celebrate. In general, the wines are exuberantly fragrant and show fresh clear fruit on the nose with abundant aromatic complexity. Structurally they are rich in ripe, fine, and powerful tannins. They are toned, muscular, and athletic, coupled with freshness, a keen sense of focus, great length, and an astute balance." ~James Suckling on the 2015 Barolo Vintage

Aging: 30 Months in large French Oak “Botti” with a small portion in French Oak Barrels for the first 12 Months

Tasting notes: 100% Nebbiolo. A classic style Barolo. Excellent structure, harmony, elegance. Soft tannins and balanced fruit. Approachable, but with a very long aging potential. Barolo is such a great wine that should not be described as a “basic” or “regular” Barolo, simply because it does not have any additional indication on the label.

Reviews

The aromas are so complex yet subtle with wet earth, mushrooms, and dark fruits. Dried flowers as well. Full body, chewy tannins that are ultra-fine and powerful, yet there is a finesse and beauty to them as I said from barrel.Classic, great nebbiolo. Try in 2023 ~98 James Suckling

The fruit for this wine is sourced from Pio Cesare’s plots in the Ornato vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba. It has a big, bold palate impression with lovely fresh acidity framing a core of delicate red fruits and heavier plummy notes. The tannins are fine and chalky, and despite this vineyard’s reputation for producing heavily structured wines, it’s relatively light on its feet, juicy and moreish. Although delicious, it seems a waste to drink it so early in its life – I would leave it for at least another couple of years for all the elements to fully integrate and then decant after opening. Vinified in stainless steel before spending 18 months in barriques and a further 12 months in botti. Drinking Window 2021- 2045 ~95 Decanter

Balsamic aromas of eucalyptus mingle with enticing scents of wild berry, rose, espresso, and tobacco. On the full-bodied, elegant palate, smooth, fine-grained tannins lithely support Marasca cherry, cranberry, star anise, and exotic spice while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. One of the best showings I’ve had of Ornato so far. Drink 2021–2030. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

With powerful fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the 2015 Barolo Ornato is a plush and dense red wine with a contemporary feel that prizes richness and overall accessibility. There is a level of softness here that permeates the entire wine and adds to the already-intense aromas of red fruit, blackberry, spice, tar, asphalt, and candied orange peel. This structured Barolo is best tasted with a platter of Alpine cheeses and jellied honey. ~93+ Wine Advocate
