About the Wine

Thanks to the Komes family Hawaiian roots, they have managed to infuse the "Aloha Spirit" into everything they do. The Aloha spirit is the combination of mind and heart in each person. This is reflected in the beautiful and lively wines that they deliver to the world!

In 1929, Flora Komes, born in Hawaii, moved to San Francisco. She was just 18 years old and had little money in her pocket, but this did not stop her from chasing her dreams. By 1935, Flora met her future husband, Jerry. Jerry and Flora formed a family full of love, support, respect, and work ethic.

In 1977, this traditional American family started a dream that later (and after a lot of hard work and dedication) would be known today as Flora Springs. It all started when Flora fell completely in love with a large and old abandoned winery, and they decided to acquire it from its former owner. Just one year later, the Komes family was already producing their first batch of wines. By 1980, their Chardonnay already had a gold medal at the Los Angeles Country Fair! That same year, they decided to renovate and modernize the old winery. In addition, they purchased vineyards in some of the most prestigious wine areas in all of Napa Valley.

Thanks to their hard work and their dream of becoming a benchmark for Californian wine around the world, in 1994, they appeared in the Top 100 Wines list by Wine Spectator. And from there on, everything went uphill, achieving exquisite wines that you and I can taste today!

Flora Springs vineyards are certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Their great love for the land has led the Komes family to manage the vineyard in a sustainable way since the beginning.

2016 Flora Springs Poggio Della Papa is inspired by the classic Italian Sangioveses. It is made with Sangiovese grapes from Oak Knoll vineyards in Napa Valley. This region is particularly special thanks to the wonderful cool climatic conditions, which are reflected in an extraordinary acidity. This, combined with the Syrah and Petit Verdot from warmer regions, gives us a lovely and fresh wine. Perfect for Italian cuisine, Buon Appetito!

Aging: 18 months in new French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: Sangiovese, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, succulent wine with bright red fruit flavors of Bing cherries, fresh strawberries and rhubarb bolstered by vanilla crème. This wine pairs beautifully with Italian dishes like pasta Bolognese or Fettuccine Alfredo.
