About the Wine

“Barolo is more than one of the world's great wines and a partner to one of Italy's most varied and refined cuisines. It's an evocative landscape of gently rolling hills covered by a quilt of vineyards and topped by medieval villages with winding cobblestone streets and views to the Alps.” ~ Wine Spectator.

Schiavenza is located in the magical region of Serralunga d'Alba, in the Barolo DOCG. This winery, which began with the brothers Vittorio and Ugo, is currently managed by Luciano Pira. Luciano and Nebbiolo are like synonyms, this brilliant agronomist has been producing some of the most exceptional Nebbiolo’s from this region.

Schiavenza is made up of more than 24 acres of vineyards in Serralunga d'Alva, plus some acres in Monforte d'Alba, both vineyards are home to excellent quality, top-tier, artisanal red wines. Everything about Schiavenza winery is impressive, the winery radiates the culture of the Piedmont area.

2016 Schiavenza Broglio Barolo is an exceptional Nebbiolo. It is balanced, fruity but smooth, deep, and long. If you truly want to experience the magic of a beautiful Barolo, this wine is for you! Broglio is Schiavenza most fruit-forward cru.

This wine comes from one of the best vintages in Piedmont from the last recent years, Wine Spectator gave it a 98 point review and stated that it: “Resulted in a long growing season and ideal harvest conditions. Balanced, vibrant, and tense Barolos”.

Tasting Notes: 100% Nebbiolo. This wine has a great structure, it is austere but deeply exciting. Aromas of cherries, currants, combined with tobacco and earthy notes. It finishes off with a long and fine length. Pair this wine with game, grilled dishes, or mature cheeses. Barolo <$40/btl is fast disappearing. BHW's direct import model allows us to bring you quality wines at great prices.

Reviews

The Schiavenza 2016 Barolo Broglio is a generous and open-knit expression that unfolds to dark fruit, ripe cherry, spice, cola, and aniseed. This expression makes room for warmer notes of smoked bacon or tilled earth. Those aromas seem to reflect a savory quality inherent to the fruit or winemaking rather than any ripeness from the vintage. In fact, those savory tones quickly cede to bright and tonic fruit flavors and a good dose of tingly acidity. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Very aromatic with dried-strawberry and tile character. Some dried flowers, too. Medium to full body and firm, silky tannins. Berry, cedar, and leather undertones on the finish. Drink now. ~93 James Suckling

Aromas of tar and leather lead off in this rich, vivid red, with a core of ripe cherry. Evolves across the palate, building to a tightly wound tapestry of fruit, mineral, and balsamic elements on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2045. 200 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator

Fragrant blue-flower, ripe plum, and baking-spice aromas mingle with new leather. Full-bodied and enveloping, the concentrated palate doles out mouthfuls of ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry jam and licorice cushioned in velvety tannins ~93 Wine Enthusiast
