About the Wine

Domaine Louis Latour covers 48 hectares of vineyard, including 27 hectares of Grand Cru, and is the largest holding of Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. The Domaine is centered in the village of Aloxe-Corton which has been the Latour's family home since the creation of the house. Their philosophy has always been to maximize the quality of grapes to produce great wines; 90% of the work is done in the vineyards however the remaining 10% is critical. The care and attention to detail seen in the vineyards are carried over into their winemaking where commitment to traditional and manual techniques brings out the absolute best in all of their wines.

"But the 2015 vintage is something special. Tasting through a large range over the past few months, its tannins and concentration are striking...There’s no question that these wines will age. In 10, 15, or even 20 years from now, the top wines will give an almost otherworldly pleasure you can only find in Burgundy." ~Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast

Louis Latour stands out among its competitors as it controls every aspect of production from grape to bottle. The winery operates its own vineyard, nursery, forests for oak sourcing of their barrels, printing shop, and even unique bottle shape.

Today, Maison Latour operates 25 family-owned and managed companies around the world. The winery produces wine from 140 appellations. The winery also owns and operates Maison Simmoney-Febve in Chablis and Maison Henry Fessy, which remarkably produces wines in nine out of ten Cru Beaujolais. The winery also produces white wine in the Ardeche (near Cotes du Rhone) and Pinot Noir at Dom. de Valmolsinne in Southern France.

In the US, Louis Latour operates as its own importer, cutting out the middleman, which mirrors BHW's own cost-efficiency.

Jean Charles Thomas has been the winemaker at Louis Latour for 32 years. Prior to that, he apprenticed with Jean Pierre Jobard for more than 10 years. Jean Charles is widely considered one of the finest winemakers in the world, with unrivaled experience and expertise with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. During his tenure at Louis Latour, he has produced more than 40 wines rated 95+.

Aging: 10 to 12 months aging in 100% new oak barrels

Tasting Notes:100% Pinot Noir. The Echezeaux Grand Cru 2015 has a dark ruby color. It reveals a nose with mocha, coffee, and amaretto hints. In the mouth, it is round and full, with tastes of red crunchy fruits, undergrowth after a summer storm, and grilled notes. Tannins are present and mellow. This wine is frank, very elegant with wonderful persistence.

Reviews

From the largest Grand Cru in Vosne-Romanée, this wine has plenty of structure as well as the fruit that shines in this vintage. It is rich and smoky with black fruits and redberry flavors. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

This is tightly wound and linear in profile, with concentrated flavors of black cherry, violet, earth, and tar, held together by bright acidity and chalky tannins. ~93  Wine Spectator

There is both good freshness and vibrancy to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a contrasting mouth feel in that it's at once seductive yet robust while offering sneaky good length on the palate coating and youthfully austere finish. 2027+ ~93 Burghound
